The feeding may take place on the seed leaves or the regular leaves if any have de veloped. The insects are usually in the extreme tip of the plant. If feed ing happens to take place at the point where the two seed leaves branch the plant frequently dies but feeding elsewhere has little effect on the growth of the plant, feed ing continues in these places until squares appear. i lien trie principal i o Vir cnnartK Ac lno- c ffio ' plants have an abundance of squares which have not been punctured th developing bolls are practically free of injury, but the increase in the number of weevils in the field and: the puncturing of a majority of the squares the insects begin attacking bolls. It is necessary for the fen)ale weevils to obtain food from the squares before they are able to de velop eggs. As long as they have nothing bat leaves to eat as is the case very early in the spring they show no tendency to lay eggs. After beginning to Lay eggs the fe male weevil obtains practically all of its food while it is gnawing holes in the squares in which to place eggs. The male weevil, however, remains on a' square for some time puncturing it over and over until it begins to become dry. Weevils regularly take moisture from dew or rain drop? on the leaves and other parts of the plants. The first sign, of the injury of cot ton squares by weevils is what is called flaring. This is the spread ing outward of the three leaf-like di visions of the shuck enclosing the square. At about the same time that the square flares it turns yellow in color. These fLarfng and discol ored squares are- easily seen in the field. How soon flaring occurs de pends on the size of the square and the climatic conditions. Sometimes I it takes place overnight but generally on plants other than cotton. It is j often observed in Okra blooms. It has never been found placing eggs in okra pods and efforts to force it to J do so have failed. In one labora- j tory experiment a weevil developed in the bud of a wild plant related to j cotton but in thousands of observa tions in the running though years no cases have been found of the de- j velopment of the weevil in any plant j other than cotton. When placed in bottles the weevils j will feed on various fruits but this is only due to starvation and probably never occurs under natural conditions IT IS NOW TIME TO BUY YOUR a miner The North Carolina Board of Ex- of Trained Nurses will hold examinations May 22-23 and 24 in Winston-Salem at the Robert E.
