NO. 00. l faJwr ' DEAD OPEN AND SHUT; Or tht way fhe$ play in Arkenta. st roat BAaaiawrow. . . - " Few, who tmrelimuch oii the xt6dA Mississippi at an earlyday hut who have heard with dread the name of Gen. William Montgomery, and none,, hut knew of the landiha: called ' Montgome ry's Point,' which, fat its location, and peculiar advantages, -was hard to be ex celled. Montgomeryji himselfwas a fall, shrewd, quick. witied, law-bred fel low, who in ' jofftiifeh exploits, was sel dom, if erer eaualled. He was the ter- ror of the South, to all who knew him. and as a Bportsman, ganxbler, doc was us notorious as the celebrated Captain Kiddfor a pirate. The Gsncral was said to hive redeeming qualities in his gamine transactions, which might be classed as follows : ' First. If he found a man naked, he clothed him. If he was hungry he fed him. SecondPIf he was thirsty and poor, he gave him to drink, and advised bim to leave for some more salubrious clime. And last, thou eh not least, if he was thirsty and rich, he made him drink and then robbed him. His notorious life was the occasion of all gamblers yielding to his nefarious de signs, who chanced to tall in with him ; and whatever the General said, must of course, be right, as none dared to gain say him. ' It was about the time when his noto riety had attained its height, that a French gentleman, accompanied by a huge Yankee, arrived at the 'Point on their way to the head waters of the Ar kansas river, arid, as there was no other hotel in the place, put up with the Gen eral. Applications -being made to him for conveyance, he advised them to defer their journey some few days, as he thought the prospect of high water was in their favor. This proposition was by no means a welcome one to Jonathan, who had heard more than once,, of the desperate character of their host ; and he declared he would " rather walk, and make a pack-horse of himself than re main. The Frenchman assured Jnm, likewise, that his business was very iir eeut, that he must go on foot, even if mere was no otner conveyance. ne General wasnot pleased with the deter mined obstinacy of the two, but could not well hit unon a clan whereby to de tain them with their own consent, so he finally agreed to take them through on horseback, as far as fort Smith. The horses were accordingly equipped,, and the General, with his negro, the French man and the Yankee, at length set out making quite a respectable looking car avan, for the Arkansas wilderness. Ere they mounted, however, the uen- eral began running his 'sou sawder ' on the Yankee, about the many advanta ges he possessed over multitudes of the southern people, which were no other than being sufficient in strength to an swer as his own pack-horse, and though he might have bushels of wooden nut megs, and horn gun-nints, to pacx through the State, he could always ac commodate bunseu. The Yankee felt somewhat chagrined at the insinuation, tor tear that tne Frenchman might consider him a man of that character. After' their leaving, the General still caused Jonathan no small uneasiness, by his continued at tacks upon his nativity, &c The Frenchman soon discovered the annoy ance the General was giving the Yankee and insisted that he was too hard in ac cusing his honest friend of having to do with anything of so base a charater. At this the General laughed, and told him his accusations were no ways er roneous. The Yankee ground his teeth and remarked: "It'starnal well for ydu that I ain't at hum, for if I was I'd give it to ye, darn ed quick tew." 'Don't vou see," said the General, turning to the Frenchman, with aq in sinuating glance, Monsieur believe ' it too true to be a joke." At this the Frehchr man assured the sit foot down ; easier that the QaatxaX only Jested. . "You are as mistaYerV replied the General, "as if you nsA burnt your finger.
