Among the passengers in the steamer Commodore, from this city 10 New Haven, lust Saturday morning, wero the wife of a Cormsli miner name Rowe, and Live or 3ix children, chiefly girls, the oldest not exceeding ten er eleven year of age, and the youngest a babe. The arrived hrrc from Wales only about two weeks since, nnd were on their way to the Bristol (Conn.) copper mines, where they hoped to meet their husband and father. As the sieoiuer was leaving the wharf tho mother stood ia the gangway, almost frantic wilh anxiety and grief. Had the kind-hearted oaptuin (Lcfevrc) Wen present and under stood her case, he would have waited till lier daughter had come on board, or until the mother and her other children could be pat on shore. But as it was, the family were seperalcJ, under circumstances of peculiar '.rial. Il npp?ari ihat a few minutes before the steamer atartcU the mother senl her oldest daughter, a girl between twelve and thirteen years of age. to buy some bread. Before she returned the steamer was off for New Haven What the poor girl's thoughts were when she returned to the wharf nnd found the boat gone, and herself left alone 111 a strange city of half a million ot inhabitants, we know not, but can pnrtly murine 1 he mother was, if possible, still more wretched VV hen she found that the steamer was actually off. and that there wus no hope of returning to the w 11 art, an me leuuer sym pathies of a parent hr art were awakened within her, nnd she ran about the boat cry- . n. 1 'i 1 ai rwei. . 1 0 .. tng ' Uh, my cnnii v 1 nc stcwaru 01 me boat nnd some oi trie pnssengers inert to console her by Idling her that the Inile girl would no doubt be taken care of, nnd be sent up to her at New Haven by the evening boat This affon'ed her a gleam of horn, but hrr fears still predominated. .... ' . . ,, . ! .t What coma .viatiiua uo, penniless, 111 me midslof strangers, without a home or friend, or knowledge of any ihing around her ? Whom could sue trust? How liabio to be decoyed away by villians, and reserved for doom worse than dealh ' Hogarth could not have desired a more lively personifica tion of jrrief than when that mother, being in a measure qirelod, sat sobbing in her chair, nursing her infant, nnd hugging it to her bosoTB, while her other children, ex cept the lost one. sat around hr on the floor, not one of them uttering a cry, but every countenance expressive of the deep est sorrow. Presently Captain Lefevre came and sat down by thrm, and. after some soothing remarks, returned! them the whale of their passage money. Heveral dollars were also given thembjr passenger. Tfca ri: more nee.iful, na by waiting for Matilda at ; New Haven until Saturday ' evening? ibey a C!l TUr lhc l,CCCMit of.-pendiBj-tli. Sabbath there, as theye was no (iitaieqiicnt tram for Bristol until Monday. I But what if Matilda should not como 1 . What if they shoulil never see her , again 1 , rJ Vse apprehensjons, toother with the anxiety already endured, produced symptoms! of meutal aberration in the mother, even before she arrived at New Haven. Imm. dialely on their arrival a telegrnphic de spatch was forwarded lo Messn. flnxton and Webb, agenU of the line in New York, requesting them to send by the afternoon hoat the litilo girl that wae left in the mor ning, and saying thai her mother would wmi for her at New Haven. ' Oe receiving ihw message, Messrs. Saxton Su, Webb, who liad no previous knowledge ofhe mishap, went to the wharf, and found the little girl crying. This must have been at least fi ve hours after the . steamer's depart- ure. They told her. the message they had received from New Haven, and that Ihey would send her safe to her mother in a few hours, which they accordingly did, frte of eost. Thus, after a day of fearful anxiety amd suspense, the family circh was again united, to tho great joy 0f ail, though lhc shattered mind of the inother prevented . her from a full appreciation of the fact. The family where she spent the Kfthbaih informed us that she was evidently a Rood deal derang ed, and thai Matilda sai 1 she liad been so before. Her former deransrement was occasioned by tho loss of a husband and child, tho latter, being burnt or scalded to death. On Monday she and all her chil dren took ihn railroad train for Bristol, and must have reached their ue&tiaaubrLin a few hours. Here is one small chapter ul ihe hfe of a poor hard-working woman; ami, if we could read the unwritten history of fumi- les ana individual, how many ucu scenes. or ollicrs equally and still more afflicting, would rise upon our vision.- Af. H Jmr. of Comvmee, THE UNFORTUNATE CIPHER. Tho following capital story is from Le Follett, a French publication : "A merchant at Marseilles, having a bu siness correspondent on the African coast, bethought lum, that aa some members of hia family- had shown a partiality (or mon keys, he might gratify them by sendtrg for one or two specimens of these animals from America. Accordingly, he wrote to bis correspondent to procare two or three of the finest and most admired species, and transmit them lo Marseilles. Chance o ordered it that in putting down the w (in English or) between the figures 2 and 3, he made ine very prominent, while lhe remained scarcely visible. Borne months afterwards a ship porter came in all haste to tho old merchant, and announced to him that his menagerie had arrived. "Meoag cn'e !" cried the merchant. "Yes, a me nagerie, n whole cargo of monkeys .had arrived to his consignmenL" The mer chant could scarcely credit the announce ment, until the letter of his "Correspondent was put in his hands. In thai epistle the African negotiant, a man ol the most uncompromising exactitude, excused him self very earnestly for not having been able, with all hiii exertions, to procure more than I'ifl monkeys, in place of the '203 ordered, but promised, as soon as possible, to fulfil the entire demand. The feelings of the hone si merchant may be giieswd, when on moving down to the quay to satisfy him self on the subject by occnlar irtspecinm, he beheld his 160 monkeys, all duly eaged and littered, nnd grinning at him with the most laudable pertinacity. It was the mo ment when a man might reasonably doubt whether it would be best to tuuh or cry So touch for the value or cyphers."
