arrested by the display of some miniatures
in a willow ; attached was a card, mfornv

found at certain hours, accompanied with
a polite invitation to the public in general
to walk up to his studio and examine the
"collection" on hand, to which there was
'free admission."-
Our hero accepted the invitation forth

of the painter ; he made an awkward bow,
which was responded to by a courteous sa

"I say, mister," thus Dan opened the con

"Veryfsvell, sir ; when will the lady be
ready for her first sitting ?" inquired Mr.
Easel.
"Her what?" ejaculated Dan.
"Her first sitting," rejoined the artist ;
'when shall I first have the honor of seeing
her?"
'Seeing her !" our hero repeated, M see

And how am I to make a likeness, nev

"Didn't you tell me, stranger, that you
painted them picters down thar, and if you
painted them, you kin pninl her; she's an

Here are two pictures,'' continued Mr Ea

considered beauties : the one a blonde the

and TetmexAM have also, been largely
benefitted by the samedcan, in thenrfrspev;
sal of their domain, a vast portion of
which must' have remained unoecupied
and valueless but for the immense .increase
of facilities foe the preparation of cotton for
the market. In the three States ot Alabama
Mississippi and Louisiana, the sales of the
public lands of the general goverrrrent
amounted to 18,099,505 ace, during the
eleven years ending on the 30ih of une
1844 yielding to the National Treasury
more than W0,000,000. - The sales of up
land cotton lands by the United States land
officers, have amounted to many tens of
millions of acres; and none have been sold
at a lower rate than s)l 25 an acre a large
proportion at a higher rate.
It is to be remarked, finally, thai the cot
ion gins now in use througcfotit' the whole
South are truly the original- invention of
Whitney that no improvement or success
ful variation of the essential parts has
yet been effected. The actual characteristics
of the machine (the cylinder and brush.)
the sole real instruments by which the seed
is Temdved and the cotton cleared retrain
in cotton gins of evei the most reeent
manufacture, precisely il Whitney-left
them. The principle has not been Altered
since the first cotton-gin was put in morion
by the inventor, though grtai improvements
have been made in :he applitatrori and direc
inn of the moving forces in the employment
of steam power, in the running-gear and
oiher incidentals, every one of the various
cotton gins in use under the names'of differ
ent makers, contain the essentials of Whit
ney's patent without material change or -addition.
The brush and the cylinder,
like Pulton's paddle-wheel, remain unchan
ged in form and necessity, however
vast the improvements in the machinery
that causes the motion.
We must tell our coutrymen, that but
for our inventors there would be a great
deal of dry whistling among our cotton
lords and cotton manufacturing baronets.
Yet how have pur., inventorj been treated
as a general thing.. Why most all the inven
tions that have proved to be of real benefit
and which have yielded the greatest pro
fits, are just the very inventions for which
the inventors were poorest remunerated.
Many inventions have made theuprojectore). .
nch but it is to be regretted that so many
good inventors have sunk into the rave
amid poverty and suffering.
