With one atxord, we feci sure, they would respond to such a Letter, addressed to them to such a strik ing illustration of Woman's lovo and her Conjugal devotion that they -f would re fuse to her eurnest supplication nothing wunin tneir rightlul authority to grant. Such a response has the President made, wiih a promptness and a cheerful ness of will which adds grace to the act, and, as the first public act, so to speak, of Ins intercourcc with the exterior worul, cannot fall to be unanimously applauded by his countrymen. HIGHLY INTERESTING CORRESPONDCME. Letter from the Lady of Sir John F(ankii.n . to the President of the United Slates. Bedfoud Place, London, April 4, 1849. Sir : I nddres myself to you as the head of a great nation, who3e power to bejp me 1 atnnot doubt, and in whose dn position to do so 1 have a confidence which I trust you will not deem presumptuous. The name of my husband, Sir JortN FranhLIN, probublj not unknown to you. It ig intimatelj connected with the north ern part of that continent of which the American republic forms to vast and con 8Dicious a Dortion. When I visited the Unitea StttelrewV ago, amongst the many pruols I received ol respect and courtesy, there was none which touched and even surprised me more than the ap preciation every where expressed to me of his former services in geographical disovery, and tne interest felt in the enter prise in wh.ch he was then known to be engaged. The expectation fitted out by our Gov ernment for the discovery of the North west Passage (that question which for three hundred years has engaged the in terest and bamed the energies of tne man of science and the navigutor) sai.ed under my husband' command, in May, 1645. The two ships, 'Erebus' nd "Terror," contained 138 mer , (tiffioers and crew,) and were victualled fur triree years. They were not expected home unless success had early revin!ed il.cirelfi ris, or some casual ty hastened iheir retun , before ibe close of 1847 ; nor were any tidings expected from them in the interval But when the au tumn of 1847 arrived, wi;hout any intelli gence of tbe ships, the nttention of her Majesty's Government was hrccied to the necessity of searching for and conveying relief to thera, in case of lt?ir .being im prisoned in ice or wrecked, and in of provisions and means of transport For this purpose an expediton, in three divis ions, was fitted out in the earhy part of last year, directed to three different quarters simultaneously, viz : First, Co that by which, in case of sue cess, thie ships would coma out of the Po lar Sea tQ the westward, (or Behrjnf'a Stfail.) Second, to thai by which they entered on their course of discovery, on the eastern side, (or Davis's Strait.) And, third, to an intervening portion of tho Arctic shore, approachabU by land from the Hudson Bay Company's settle ments, on which it was supposed the crews, if obliged to abandon their ships, might be found. This last division of the expedition was plaeed undrrthe command of my husband's faithful friend, the companion of bis former travels, Dr. Sir John Richardson, who lan ded at New York in April of last year, ami hastened to join his men and boats, which were already in advance towards the Arc tic shore. Of this portion of the expedition I may briefly say, that the absence of any intelligence from Sir John Richardson, at this season, pioves he has been unsuccess ful in the object of bis search. The expe dition intended for Be firing's Strait has hitherto been a' complete failure. It con sisted of a single ship, the Plover, which, owing to her setting off too late and to her bad sailing properties, did not even ap proach her destination last year. The re maining and most important pjrfon of the searching expedition consists of two ships, undsr the command of Sir J amis Ross, which tailed hut Maiw Dafis'f Glrajt, but ditf norsucccecT. owinut' lo fLe m& the ico, in gaUwg into Lanct ,Spiind till tb eiiort ' tor efkrattorm hm ftearly cloaed. I have entered irrto these details iiiin view. of proving thnl, though the lirituh Government has not forgoiirm tbe di.'y it owes to the brnve men whom it has sent on a perilous service and has spent a very large sum 'n providing the means for their rescue, yet that, owing to various causes, tho means actually in operation frr th'n purpose are quite inadequate to meet the exireme exigence: o( the enf? ; for fr mast be remembered (hrft thn missing hip mtualledirvf th rfj flU-Onlfv 'f the survivors of so aflj; ftnltr in ihJge" must be at the last extremity : arid t mo it must be borne in mind that the channel by which the ships may have attempted to fore a passage to the westward, or which they may bavt been compelled by, nd verse circumstances Jo take, are very jiutnerouj and iOmplicated, aad- that w ot, two ships cannot possibly in the course, of tha next short sammeY explore them alL..r Tha Board of Admiralty, under, a cs victron of this fact, has been lnriucsifcur&f fer a reward of 26,000 merlin? tb any ship or ships of any country, or to xpl ring party whatever, which haa -render efficiejit assistance to tho missing ships, er crews, or to tiny portion of vhem. This an nouncement, which, even if thr sum fcaoy been dotibleil or trebled, would hare met with public approbation, 'Comes, however, too lute for our whalers, which had unfor tunately sailed before it wast Issued, arM' which, even if "Ihe new3 should overtake ihein at their fishing gfpunds,, are fotally unfitted for any prolonged adventure, hav ing only n few months' prqvisions on board and no additional clothing. To fhe Ameri can whalers, boih in the .Atlantic and Pa cific, I look with more hope as competi tors for the prize, being well aware of their numbers and strength, their thorough equip ment, and the bold spirit of enterprise which animates iheir trews. But I venture to look even beyond these. I am not without hope that you will deem it not unwonny et a great and kindred nation to take up the cause of humanity, which t plead in a na tional spirit, and thus generously make it your own. I must here in rr&titude adduce tne ex ample of the Imperial Russian Government which, as t am led to hope by rns fc-xeel-lency tbe Russian Ambassador in Ivmdon, who forwarded n mertfortal oW the slfljet, will send out exploring parties this sommer from the Asiatic side of Berrring's' Btrait, northwards, in search of the "'lost vessels. It would be a noble spectacle to tlte Vorld if three great nations, possessed of The wi- rlpot omnirra nn the fare nf th rrlnhp trpfs thus to unite their efforts in the" truly ch,rfi tian work of saving their perisHing feIT3,w; men from dcsiruction. It is not for me lo suggest the mode in which such benevolent efforts miji;i. be-t t.c made I will only say, however, th.it if Ihe conceptions of my own mind, to which I do not venture to give utterance, were re alized, and that in the noble competition which followed American seamen had th good fortune to wrest from us t!,e ' iry. -rs might be the case, of solving the problem of theunfound passage, or the still greater glory of saving our adventurous navigators from a lingering fate which th mind sick ens to dwell on, though I should in either case regret that it was not my own brave countrymen in those seas whose devofton was thus rewarded, yet should I rejoice that it was to America we owed our restor ed happiness, and should be forever bound to ber by ties of affectionate gratitude. I am not without son e misgivings wile I thus address you. The intense anxieties of a wife and of a daughter may hare led me to press loo earnestly on your notice ihe trial under which we are suffering, (yet not we only, but hundred ef others,) and to presume too much on ihesjmpaihy which we are assured is Call beyond the limits of ourownland- Yet, ifyou deem this to be the case, yoa will Mill find, I am sure, even to that personal intensity of feeling, an excuse for the fearlessness with which I throw myself oo your geriewity, and. w.Ulpa''i the homage I thus; pay to your own high chunetar. and lo ihat.Aftaa iteoble jOVef . I beg to annex some expianalury papers otice nf the Expedition of Discovery und Search nnv in the An tic ikaj.
