THE GOLD BEADS.
CHAPTER L
The evening sua streamed fair anct bright
over a coiugo ia, the southern part of Fta
Ij, tangled over with vines and embosomed
in a cloud of green ; the air was perfumed
by trues fragrant with blossoms, and lb
ear rcg.ileil with the mulody of .birds.
At a short distance, under the shade of
a spreading oak, sat the two maiden who
with their parents occupied this charmint

dant sward, singing a wild air of her na
tive land, in a voice whieb rivalled tfo
birds , thru warbled in th grove. Mean
while, Zillia, the younger later, sat by a
cle;tr fountain, reading In a small volume
w'hieh she held in one hand, while thi oth
er, white and motionless as if c&rved from
ivory, hung over the fountain holding a
wreath of orange flowers.
A: this moment, Arthur De Vere, the
accepted suitor of Nina RonaJdi, appeared
walking up an ft venue sheltered by fine old
trees, accompanied by Theodore Blakely,
a young English stranger, who paused to
admire the fair prospect spread out before
them. But his eyes ceased to wander over
the landscape when once -the-jr h4 rested
on Zillia. Her form, was exquisitely ym-
metricnl, nr:d her beautifully chissalled fea
tures were such as a sculptor might bare
chosen to study. Her dark radiant eyes,
shaded by iheir thick inky fringes, resem

the dark leave) of the ivy ; the teeth whi
ter than pearls ; the jetty ringlets tiuster
ui round a neck of alabaster : all 'these
jomed to an exprassion of almost an Angel,
fomed a perfect combination of loveliness.

ed her slightest movement, had made upon
his heart, becoming deeper and deeper each
moment he spent in her be witching society.
On theother hand, the unsophisticated 2m

of foreign countries, Zillia now listened to
glowing and impassioned language from
her lover, t which she had hitherto been a

the thoughtlessness of youth in forming
imaginary cables and decking them with

CHAPTER II
A beautiful and romantic scene reposed
calmly in the delicious moonlight Zillia,
.N inn. Theodore, and Arthur De Vere, at
:r:tc:i'l by the uncommon beauty of the

youthful Zillia. To her fair brow the flow

be otherwise than happy. But Theodore
seemed to partake of the melancholy tbat
pervaded the lovely scene, and be seemed

I ui's arch and careless laugh rang upon his
ear.
What is the matter with you, Theodore,
exclttitned she at length, weaned with his
taciturnity ; if you don't talk more I will
join Arthur and Nina instead of moping all
this sweet evening away.
If I talk Zillia I will only make you as
sad as I am, replied her lover. Zillia shook
her bright curls doubtingly, and said ; In
deed I am too happy this evening to cry
atout any thine . but say on, I am atten
tive ; vou have lost the braid of hair 1 gave
you and want m- to give you another; well,
maybe I will and maybe I won't. Zillia,
said Theodore, m a tone of deep sadness,
