A N.Y. VOLUNTEER RETURNED How he got Drank and lost all his Gole 1 Some three years ago, a man of family numed Andrew Loughrey, while on a drunken frolic, enlisted in Col. Sterenson'i New York regiment, and tailed for Cali fornia. At the close of the Mexican war, he was discharged and went to lhe gold diggings. Hi3 success and subsequent career irny be known by reading: the fol lowing latter received by hie wife a week or two since. We copy the letter, there fore, for the sake of the moral which we have to append to it : 'San Francisco. California, April 9, 1 849. 'Dear Wife 1 received your letter this day, dated 1 8t March, 1848. Dear Bridget, I have wrote to you four letters, wnich I expect you never received them, but when I received this this day, it causes me more gladness than one thousand dollars, which I can spare at a moment's warning. When I came down from the mines, I deposited twenty-seven pounds of gold, finer than Barnet could make it, in Mercer ttreet Leal miugev, ii juui v go draw what you want from Mr. Q., as I will pay Wm double intejest on every cent that he gives you. I want you to keep George at school, as I have something in my power now to make him a man during his life. Dear Eliza, my daughter, I hope you re a good girl, and take your mothers advice. After being discharged, I spent six months at the mines, after that I came down to San Francisco, on account of hear ing of a letter from New York. This caused me eight hundred miles of journey, Dear Bridget: From here, I am going right back to the mines, but you may ex pect me back next fall. You may not write any more. James Brogan is going with me, next turn, to the mines ; and from James's sentiments, he is coming with me to New York Dear Bridget, for these last six months it cost me fifteen hundred dol lars. Snow or rain, 1 coulJ pick up a doub- loonor ounce a day Dear Bridget, I am as smart now, after all the fatigue of Cali-1 brought before the Judge, where, not know fornia, as a French dancing master. I ing what to say, he plead guilty, and Waa wish you all well, but in a short time you J fined fifty cents and costs, which amounted will see another kind of an Andrew Lough- j in all to $3. This sum waa beyond his rey in New York. I have not danced ! power to pay, and he was sent to a damp Paddy Burns, the School Master,' in 18 1 and noisome lock-up, and eonfimd ttith months '' I in the worst stages of delirium tremenx.-- This leiter was received here, and pub-! Oh, most righteous Judge I it was perhaps lished in the Emwig Post on the 20lh June Only two days after its receipt, to the extreme surprise and joy of his wife and family, loughrey presented himself before them. He had accumulated at ihe mines nine or ten thousand dollars, and supposing the sum inexhaustible, took passage to this country very soon after the above letter was written, having about $7,000 worth of dust in his trunk, and the balance of his wealth on his person His idleness and prosperity were too much for his new resolutions. He aban doned himself to intemperance, and the money so easily acquired, was lightly pri zed. On his arrival in this city he hired carriage to carry him to his home, which his golden letter had but a few hours pre vious made so happy ; but before he reach ed it he contrived to spend forty dollars, in drink and upon his driver, and on his arri val, the trunk containing his $7000 was mis- sing, and a large portion oi me money wnicn he had brought away upon his person His unhappy wife, when she became aware of her fooush husband's improvidence, so - licited the aid of gentlemen to whom she was known, and steps were immediately taken to preserve what money had not been wasted, and to recover what had undoubt edly been stolen from him. About $1200 were thus saved and sent to the mint at Philadelphia The trunk and its contents are probably lost forever. Loughrey can give no account whatever of it. The loss of his money is not tLc greatest of Loughrey's misfortunes. His friends here indulged the hope that he had effec tually mastered the vice of which he had to lot) been ft' victim, ind that the fervent . 1...: . .i L irJi... ... mviuuoiui contained in ws jeiier wouio, do reepectei Had they been, m and his faro ii would nor hare beeainanntd'a comfot- . table home for Ufa ; hi children vpuld hare enjoyed the inestimable adrsmaref be pro miaedfheTrj in bi Iettei nd he ould have been the pride of hir Vife the hope) of hie children and an" obiect of" reaiSect fbotbto hia friends and to biniveif. : H htut now rorfeited all conf4dfnc ui ctmeelL anjl . The water can be filtered without the charcoal by passing: it through several thicknesses of flannel, or felt, but we like the charcoal, and If jt was mixed with burned bone dust, it would "bo all the better. No person would Believe, how pure the water comes trickling through the charcoal, but charcoal is one of the best filtering substances known. Any person with common ingenuity can construct a vessel to filter upon this principle. For certain reasons we would use two ply of flyinel with a wad of cotton wool between. It would be well to let the water fall through a space open to the air, before it is received into the receiving vessel The reason for this is, that in passing through the char coal and cloth, the water is deprived of some of its atmospheric air and it should be allowed to absorb some air afterwards be fore it is used. No person should use pails that are painted with white lead. We are glad to see onpainted water pails earning into more general use. BOSTON. Harp Times for thr Nkwbiys Jere miah Harknett, a poor orphan boy, with a fair open countenance, on which honesty was plainly written, was selling newspa pers in the street, in order that he might gain an honest living. It seems that he had not a license to do so. ProbaMy he did not know that it was necessary. Two policemen, named Samuel Harkaon and Oscar Bingham, saw this little bof engag ed in his little trade, and Harkson an Bing ham knew that if they arrested this little boy, they would be entitled to the feedf fifty-four cents. This consideration was enough, and accordingly they came down on him in their mighty ralor and avarice, and took him to the Marshal's office. They there advised the little fellow to plead guilty A complaint was formally made by a man named Pierce, and the boy duly a small matter in you, in the pride of your .. . a . l . a -1 i a a si station, to sena mat cniia, wno nau ooea giilty of the awful crime of selling; a few papers, to a prison ; but did it not occur to you, that, small as it is, it might, in the future life of that boy, swell to a fearful largeness 1 Should he in after life become, from the effect of that sentence and the association of that prison, a drunkard, thief, or murderer, on whose garments woo Id the stain of his guilt rest? I must tell you a good one" which hap pened this summer on the same day that I went up the North River on board the u Hendrtck Hudsoa" After the passen gers had retired to their berths, the follow intr dialogue ensued in the ladies' cabin. of which the door was left partly opeo to promote the circulation of the air. A rheu- malic lady and an asthmatic old lady could not each be satisfied with reference to tho 1 door. They kept singing out in alternate strains from their nightcaps ; the rheuma- tice, " chambermaid, shut the door I I shall die ;" the asthmatic, M chambermaid, open that door I shall die !" So the conten tion went on for some time, and the yellow maid, with a bandana handkerchief on her head, was fairly flustered. At last an old gentleman, disturbed by the altercation, and not wishing to show any partiality', sang out from his own berth: "chamber maid, for Heaven's sake open that dour, and kill one of those ladies, and then shut it and kill t'other?"
