Whole No 545 BORROWING A GRIDIRON, Or, VA&j Mnlloney Adventore In Prance. It is well known that there is nothing more humorous und entertaining than a good Irish story ; and such we are confi dent every reader will pronounce the fol lowing, from a Dublin Journal. There tti some of the best touches in it that we hare seen for many a day. The writer bearins by a reference to Matthews' ludicrous rep resentation, in his 'Trip to America,' of an Irishman who has left his own country lo seek his fortune' and who, vfter various Manures in met-punuit, at Jength goes into t w"-r "--A-'-i.' TBeconjinganteneter fert'erarbelweeirtbfl Yankeea arid the Indian "tribe; : but the Llndians reject his proffered service, Hht poor ignorant ereatuTtt; as he nimself says, 'just bi'jcauu he did not understand their lan gnnge.' We are told, moreover, (he says) that Uoldsmiih visited the land of dykes and dams, for the purpose of teaching the Hollanders Englith, quite overlooking (un til his arrival in the country made it obvioun) that he did not know a word of Dutch, him self. Ho then proceeds as follows : lA certain old gentleman in the west of Ireland, whose love of the ridiruloua quite equalled his taste for claret and fox hunting, was wont, upon certain festive oc casions, when opportunity offered, to amuse his friends by drarring out one of his ser vants who was exceedingly fond of what ho cullotl ltia Uhravrls,' and in whom a good deal of whim, some queer stories, and, per haps, more than all, long and faithful ser vices, h;ul established a sort of right of lo quacity. He was one of these few trusty and privileged domestics, whdf if his mas ter uriheedingly uttered a rash thing in a 6t of passion, would venture to set him right. If the squire said, I'll turn that ras cal off,' iny ijriend I'at would say, 'troth you won't, sir ;' and l'at was always right, tor, if any altercation arose upon the 'sub j ject matter in hand,' he was sure to throw in some good reason, either trom former semce, general good conduct, or the dehn quent's 'wife and children,' that always turned the scale Rut I am digressing: on such merry mee tings as I have alluded to, the master, af ter making certain 'approaches,' as a mili tary man would say, as the preparatory steps in laying siege to some extravaganza of his servant, might, perhaps, assai. Pat thus . 'By the bye, Sir John, (addressing a distinguished guestj Patha 3 very curi- day reminds me of. You remember, Pat, (turning to the man, evidently pleased at tnc notice idus paia to nimsen,; you re member that queer adventure you had in France ' 'Troth I do, sir,' grins forth Pat. 'What !' exclaims Sir John, in feigned sur prise, 'was Pat ever in France?' ' Indeed he was," cries mine host and PaI adds, 'ay, and farther, plaze your honour.1 '1 assure you, Sir John,1 continues my host, 'Pat told rne a story once that supnsed me vory much respecting the ignorance of the French.' 'Indeed,' rejoins the baronet, 're ally I always supposed the French to be a most accomplished people.' 'Troth then, they're not, sir,' interrupts Pat. 'Oh, by no means," adds mine host, shaking his head emphatically. 'I believe Pat, 'twas when you were crossing the Atlantic,' says the master, turning to Pat with a seductive air, and leading hnn into the 'full and true ac count,' (for Put had thought fit to visit North Arnerikay,' for 'a reason he had,' in the autumn of the year '98) 'Yes, sir, says Pat, 'the broad Atlantic,' a favorite phrase of his, which he gave with a brogue as broad, nlmost, as the Atlantic itself. 'It I I V. r. ...nr.
