July 30. 1 84 V I am at last in the old ' region, and will attempt a description of my tedious journy here. We arrived at Stockton alter a lair passage, remained there a few days, and then atarted for this place In Icominz here we cross an arid plain of 32 muei no vegetation, no snaaen vwater, except what we carried with un, ; and one of the hottest days I ever experienced. Af ter taking on each of our back soma 00 or 70 pounds, and filling a little keg with water some fifteen of us started in compa ny. The first day we made about 13 miles and ihen laid clown lo restourexhaust ed frames on the ground, with but a single blanket each for covering. The second day we travelled but five miles in the morning and five or six in the evening. This day a man by the name of Hunt, from Massachusetts, gave out and could go no further. As he was out of water I let hitn wet his hps with mine, and some others did the same, but all we could do to revive him proved unavailing. He was determin ed to die, and we, to save our own lives, were obliged to leave him as our stock of water was getting very short. We had some 12 or 15 miles to travel before we came to a river. I never shall forget that scene of leaving that poor man lo die on the barren plain ; but that was nothing to what followed. The next day our water was reduced to a few drops. At 1 1 o'clock the sun was pouring down with unheard of intensity, and not a breath of air stirring, when an other very fine young man from New Hampshire, whom 1 had formed quite an attachment lor on our short acquaintance, and when we were within seven or eight miles of the river, as near as we could judge, wmea ngnt nown under tne sun and could go no further. All was done that could be done to arouse him to action, but without effect ; 1 gave the poor fellow a few drops, and such a scene as presented itself when we were about to leave him I hope r.ever to witness again. He drew mo down to the ground, and kissing me, said " O, Uod 1 can you leave me here to die alone 7" i iota mm to Keep up courage, that we would go to the river, where there was tent, and that we would ng up something to carry mm on, ana would be back as soon as possible ; so we bid him good bye ana started. tJeiore we reached ibe river I felt myself as if I must surely fefi, but I knew if I gave up at all it was to die, and when such thoughts as halting came over me, 1 would arouse as from a sound sleep. I never experienced such feelings. I think death from heat or exhaustion would be aa easy one. Before we got to the river two more dropped, but the survivors- eould do nothing for them, but were obliged to press forward toward the river in order to save their own lives. We at last came in sieht oi me long looked tor river, and sucb feel ings ol joy as we experienced I will not attempt to portray. After replenishing a little, we procured three mules and went back for our friends. 1 was in hopes to find the one wbo drop ped first, afire, btn when I arrived and jumped off the mule, I found a handker chief over his face; raised it; bo lay as though asleep, with his hands crossed on his breast, but he was quite dead. We put him on a mule, and one of the other two was so weak that be could not sit alone and so we trudged back to the tent, found an Indian blanket, sewed him up in it, and buried him. I staid al the river two days to recruit, tben cane on to this place. 1 here is one other route to crois this plain, where there is water in one place, but we got on the wrong road. A DANGEROUS FEAT. uilicer xamncion arrested a white wo man named Catharine Cassady. on Grace street, Tuesday evening, for disorderly con duct, lieing either intoxicated or dement ed, Officer Y found it necessary to place the woman in a hack for lbs purpose of conveying her to the cage. Having pro cured a hack and placed her in it, he di. reeled the driver to move rapidly towards the cage. Catharine shouted murder, fire, dbc., but the officer told her it was ."no go" she must go to the cage "peaceably if she would . forcibly if she must." The haekman drove off rapidly down tho street, and Officer Yarrington returned to the De pot of the R. F- and P. Railroad Company for the purpose of keeping order on thearriv al of tho evening train. Whilst the hack was moving rapidly down Capitol street, Cath arine opened one of the doors, and leaped from it, unperccived by the driver.
