THE MAN WHO COULDN'T FIGHT A series of incident Ij Arkauaas Llf. The beautiful little town of Van Buren, on the Arkansas river, near (he Cherokee line, during its enrlj history, Uas famous for the number and ferocity of Us despcra does, beinf the principal meridian and fo cus of 'rendezvous for gamblers, Indian traders, and all sorts of adventurers who had found it necessary to chantre their do- micils from lands governed by the adminis tration of a rigid criminal code. The half- breed "brutea". from the Cherokee Nation, also flocked to tho same site to drir.k, ca rouse, take a hand at cards, and exhibit ihetr prowess in sanguinary ''set-los" with pistoU and long knives. Such a slate of society mny be imagined it cannot possi- bly be described. Not a sun performed its circuit that r'lid not witness 'some dreadful single cornbut, witlj or wilhout murderous weapons, while now and then dozens at a time, and by mutual agreement, marched from the rum shops out into the public square, and encountered in mortal strife. At this period Thomas A. Meyers emi grated to Arkansas, and opened a laree grocery store in Van Buren, acting himself as the keeper and retailer. Such- an occu pation at that time required a man of the most determined courage, as the store bad always a back room or shed attached, spe cially appropriated to gambling both by day and night, and where the players were supplied with the choicest liquors, and wonld be sure to bully the groeer out of his reasonable eharges unless they were res trained by fear. For a while, however, Meyers succeed ed admirably. The half-breedn, loafers, and '-chitrtered fighters," as they called themselves, held a caucus, and unanimous ly voted "thai the new arrival was a dan gerous subject, and had better be let alone.' This verdict was altogether owing to the stranger's personal appearance, as military as might well be conceived. Tall, manly, and symmetrical in shapo, with great en dowments both of strength and agility, he would have had few equals in a, fair contest with the arms of naked nature. But by the cunning inventions of art, iron, steel and lead, and the thunder and light- j nitig of gunpowder, are made to fight for the feeblest bosom ; and thus dwarfs, and giants, provided both are alike the heirs of irue courage, now stand on the same dead level. It was believed also that Meyers poaseBscu me resoiute win to nanale those awful engines of destruction, where life deafh W 0" te touch of a tngg.r. ins LuuinenuiH'e uetoKeneu me perfection of bravery. His fine face irenerallv wore n siern expression, and, when that melted - D to a smile seemed sterner still, ilia eves were exceedingly black, wild, penetrating, and restless, and had that cold, gleaming, mcialic look, which may be regarded aj the surest sign of thorough desperation. Besides, he carried an appalling supply of pistols, and a Bowie-knife fourteen inches ir the blade. Hence, every body was res pectful and obliging to theostensible hero for a period of several week", daring which an unusual calm reigrtpjirfthe village. At length a teirible affray occurred in Meyers' grocery. Haifa dozen fire arms exploded in quick succession, and the deaf ening roar so frightened the k eeper that he fairly took to his hetla and fled from his own establislunen . The fact settled pub lic opinion as to his character. ' What a chicken-hearted coward, to run from his castle I" exclaimed General Cole, the Napoleon of frontier ducllisU and gam blers. ' "Why, he hasn't the spunk of a dead possum I" lisped Bill Green, the dandy loafer, combing his perfumed 14 soup locks" with his long rosy nmb. "Let'i drink his Iquor and smoke his ci gars and not pay him for them, because a how he'B a coward," aaid Jack Warhawk, a Huge hall breed ; and having enunciated trusenlbymem of genuine Llierokee loe- n ic. Jack leaned over thn r.nuntpr nml hrirnn ! to fill glasses and hand out cigars, crying "I oast to the brave, my boys I We ll never want while ihe world has chickens of the white feather." The firing in the grocery having ceased for more than an hour, being replied by a din of the most boisterous mirth, .Veycrs, by a great effort, mustered, the spirit to re turn. He fount the custoineis helping themselves with n vengeance, and thought to overawe i hern by (he assumption of he roic airs. He snatched his revolver from his pocket, and pointing il at Warhawk's breast, ordered huu to leave bis house. ' If that's what you're arter," shouted Jack, unsheathing his big Bowie, and springing back over the counter, " here's what will give you a ladle-full." Meyers still kept his revolver presented ; but bra hand shook like a leaf in the tem pest, his very lit grew white with terror, and bis trembling feet involuntarily retreat ed backwards by short, quiveiiog steps. The two feelings, physical fear and moral courage, were struggling' for the mastery, He was endeavoring to act bravely. Hi will was brave, but his nerves refused their concurrence, and he remained, so to speak, in equipoise totally incapable of acting at all. lie wo impotent to fight, and aa pow erless to fly. ,-;. : --.;:; ,? . .; ; ; ; There was no such hesitation- in the con duct of Jack WarhiwJr. Crafldis&ing I'm great knife with bi right; hand, tie aeid. the flowing locks of Meyer in his left, ami roared at the top of fcia lungs . t Down, coward down on your maf rowbqnes, or, by the tlud blazes, HI cut out your heart l,y.;:C- .v v V'-U V-A ' , Incredible a It may teem, Myer.t, sfill holding tils deadly revolver, loaded withj six round, cowered to the floor like a beat cn hound, and begged most" piteously Jot his life a prayer which the mocking half breed granted, or) the condition that the other should rreat the crowd for a. whole week- ''-Aic'yy, From that houf tndofirttf cAf 'tfejcit was subjected to trery specie of instill and outrage.
