company in which they are
employed.
‘‘In all generalities, secre

office. For they are the ones
who must order all supplies.

Team Policing Cuts
Local Area Crimes
by James Smith
Staff Writer
There has been only one
store break-in and five house
break-ins since Team II moved
into its present location in the
Sunrise Towers.
“And that’s because the
rapport between the police
man and the community has
gotten better,” said Lt. J.A.
Landon, team leader of unit
two of the Team Police.
‘‘Team policing is nothing
more than officers and the
people of the community
getting to know each other
better,” said Landon.
The team policing, which
started on April 1 has two
units, one in the Sunrise
Towers and another at the
Hanes plant on Ivy Avenue.
Team I covers the western
portion of the city while team
two covers the eastern
portion.
After a grant from the Law
Enforcement Assistance Ad
ministration of $179,000 was
granted, the program was
executed for a year.
After the first year, the city
will then be responsible for
the funding of the two teams.
Landon feels that team
policing is very good.
‘‘Policemen have allowed
themselves to become too
mobile. Now officers work the
same beat each day and the
same area,” he said.
‘‘The total concept about
team policing is to get the
officers out of the car and into
the street where they can fully
meet the people in the
community,” said Landon.
Landon estimates that about
500 other cities throughout the
United States are now into
team policing.
Landon feels that this way
the police department is more
able to serve the entire city.
‘‘And, whatever problems
may arise, all the officers of
the team meet together and
arrive at some sort of
solution,” he said.
He hopes that the image of
the policeman can now be
changed. ‘‘After all, police
men are not out there just to
put everyone in jail, but to
help serve the community,”
states Landon.
In team policing there are
regular patrolmen, juvenile
officers and criminal investi
gators.
According to Landon, the
community has been very
receptive with the new idea.
‘‘All you need is a little
community support.”
Several residents in Sunrise
Towers said they were very
pleased with the policemen.
Many of them feel as though
this plan should have been
executed several years ago.
And as one lady put it,
‘‘since I’ve lived here. I’ve
never been able to get a good
night’s rest, but thank the
Lord for team policing.”
