SATURDAY JULY 3,1976 F] W ? 7M Tfc* by George Boole The piscatorial art or the art of angling, or just plain fishing, that is, goes quite a ways back historically. Most probably to the pre-historic days, when hooks were a type of gorge made from.stone or some other material such as ft bone. The gorge would lodge in the throat of a fish when the fish attempted to swallow the hook of a fashion. Fish taking . such a bait probably were so . plentiful and hungry, too, that they took anything that hit the water. At one time catching fish was just another means of filling the larder. V . ??in-tne- most recent-yearsr? fishing has mushroomed into an expensive sport of hobby. Sad to say that we do not always catch fish when we go on a fishing trip. There have been so many environment changes that fishing is not what it used to be. We have to try harder and use different methods and varried tackle. Having to match wits with the K fish has put the art of fishing into the realm of sports. We wonder just who is being given a sporting, chance. Did you ever wonder how ideas came about for various type lures? It goes that a fisherman was fishing from the bank and in the meantime he opened his lunch pail. Ralph EMridge of 1519 Gholson I broken on his last catch at Wis accidently dropped his spoon into the water. The spoon wobbled down toward the bottom and provoked several fish to sprike at it. Picking up the idea of a fish-getting implement, the fisherman cut ? the handle off the spoon and fastened a hook on. The spoon proved to be a producing ture. If you have the notion to try your hand at lure makingr kits? and instructions can be bought at the sporting goods stores. With a bit of ingenuity one can create lures to ones' own liking. By tying and cementing buck tail to a short shanked treble hook, 1 fashioned a lure that caueht craooie and bass. Fish are unpredictable, theywill strike the most unlikely lures, even those that do not resemble any natural foods. If you plan your vacation , around a fishing trip, don't let the weather spoil your fun. Get out there and keep that line wet, try all of the tricks that you can come up with. Maybe you will not catch all of the fish that you want, but you will come away having had fun. Play it safe on the Fourth of July. Be extra carefGl if you are boating.
