Reynolda House, in all its
\ historic splendor and charm
/ was buzzing with excitement
. recently as it was graced with
| the vivacious return visit of
I Maya Angelou, renown poetess,
actor, writer, and
lecturer.
-f- Ms. Angelou. in her visit to
the campus of Wake Forest
University, introduced and
read various excerpts from her
newest book, Swlngln' and
Singin' And Gettin' Merry
Like Christmas, which is the
third book that she has written
as an autobiography. Her first
book, I Know Why The Caged
Bird Sings, and her second,
Gather Together In My Name
covers her childhood through
adolescent years that are
described as most difficult

ones for the young, gifted, and
black-writer. ?-?
Maya's New book, published
by Random House takes
the reader through the years
in - which -she begins, to
_ ?
experience success us an
individual, an entertainer who
sings and dances in West
Coast Clubs and especially
appearing in the cast of
"Porgy and Bess" on Tour.
Ms. Angelou held a packed
Reynolda House audience
spellbound as she did many
dramatic excerpts from her
book; some rather whimsical
and comical and others irather
moving and solemn. Spectators,
many of them friends and
acquaintances filled the seats
and sat on the floor, perched
on the stairsteps, while others
simply vyied for standing
room to hear this remarkable
lady in action.
As the famed poetess
stated, "Most of my poetry
and writing is dedicated to the
older Black Americans." Ms.
Angelou goes on to further
state that in Singin' and
S win gin' And Gettin' Merry
Like Christmas she can ' 'weep
for black and white Americans
alike because the things
that she so nobly writes about
T are the results of firsthand
