- in presenting the premier ceremonies Of the American Black
Achievement Awards on Sunday, December 10,
1978 from 11:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
Hosted by Harry Belafonte with co-hostess Donna
Summer, the event recognizes black Americans who
Iiave climbed the ladder of successiirthetr respective
fields, in the setting of a formal dinner hosted by
# celebrities from political, fine arts athletic, journalistic
and entertainment fields alike-The hour and a halt
format is enhanced by star vocalists, production
numbers and notable presenters. After the awarding
of college scholarships to two outstanding high
schoolers, the show will conclude with a presentation
by Coretta King of the Martin Luther King, Jr.

to compare the program to M
its predecessors "R6ots"
and, "The Autobiography 0
Woman Called Moses" is ^
not as good as either of
those masterpieces.
The characters seem to
lack the depth of those in
the previous program. The
whites are still stereotyped,
but apparently a conscious
effort has been made not to
"offend" anybody, because
even , the bad guys
behave kindly occasionally.
There seems to be no detail
in this production: it is like
a tour of the city by helicopter.
The. program
covers many events, but at
tooTapid a pace to generate
much suspense. The minor
characters are not developed
well enough for motivation
or understanding. But
Cicely Tyson, is, as always,
magnificent. It is well
above average television
fare, and certainly worth
seeing. ?
