Keith Picked By Howard Hoya Keith, an assistant football coach at the University of Colorado the last five seasons, has accepted the head coaching position at Howard University. Keith, 30, becomes the 22nd head coach in the University’s football history. He succeeds Doug Potter, who completed his five-year tenure with a 30-21-2 record. His appointment was announced by Dr. James E. Cheek, president of Howard University. A 1970 graduate of Ohio Northern University, Keith has spend the last seven seasons under former Colorado and and Miami of Ohio Head Coach Bill Mallory. His acceptance of the head mentor’s post ends a one month search to fill the vacancy. "The selection committee was impressed with his rich background of football and the recommenda- hons that we received on him,” said Howard University Director of Athletics Leo Miles. “He’s young, enthusiastic, and is the most organized person I’ve seen - qualities which we felt were pertinent to the football program. ’ ’ I m anxious to be a head football coach,” said Keith. “I was very happy upon hearing of my selection. Howard University has great potential, >nd 1 m very pleased with the attitude of people related to the program. ” At Colorado, Keith served as the offensive lackfield and receivers coach. During his five seasons there, the Buffaloes posted a 35-17-1 record, *ere co-champions of the Big Eight Conference, and ‘PPeared intheAstro-Bluebonnet (1975( and Orange Bowls (1976). By Robert Eller Sports Editor Winston Salem State bounced back from a dissa- pointing loss to Johnson C. Smith last Saturday to rout the Bears 93-76. With Shaw holding a 23-22 lead substitute Torin McKenzie scored from in side to put WSSU ahead for good. Luke Lowry then scored eight points, Mike Robinson six, McKenzie added another basket and David Harold and Mark Clark a basket each as the Rams rolled to a 44-31 halftime lead. Black Shaw never got closer than nine in the final half. Another spurt in the games final nine minutes built the winning margin. Reggie Gaines led all scorers with 23 points, 17 coming after intermission. The 6-7 scoring machine scored 10 points in the final five minutes including back to back slam dunks that gave WSSU an 83-61 lead with 2:59 left and brought the home crowd to its feet. Mike Robinson followed Gaines inscoring with 16 points and hauled in 17 rebounds. Mark Clark had 14 points in the win 12 in the first half. The Lady Panthers used good off-ball movement and scored the game’s last 10 points for their final 96-68 margin. The Ramettes bounced back on Saturday night to rout J.C. Smith 96-58 as Winfield scored 20 points and Linda Lee added 19. St. Augustine’s handed the Lady Rams their first CIAA loss of the season on Monday night taking a 79-71 win. Trailing 76-59 with 4:03 left, the Ramettes went to the press and closed to 76-67 with 2:53 left but could get no closer than the final margin. The Lady Falcons, who had played five times over the past week, improv’ed their record to 17-3 serves with being the key to the teams ninth conference win against two losses. ‘Lowry and McKenzie wer the story tonight. The team I started didn’t do the job. I may have stayed with Gaines and Jones (Raymond) too long in Charlotte. Lowry is prob ably the quickest kid on the club and McKenzie can create some offense for us.’ The 103-97 loss to J. C. Smith was the Rams first loss to a southern division opponent in two seasons. ‘They were hungrier than we were,’ said Gaines of the loss to ex-Virginia Union coach Robert Moore’s freshman studded squad. You can come out of the closets, bedrooms, health spas and your other places of exile now ladies. Ho longer will you have to hide out on Sunday afternoons and Monday nights. The football season is over and you won’t have to see another football game until at least August. And whats more you won’t have to put up with the NBA on CBS on Sunday’s either. Instead you can look movies and maybe even the Bob Gordon Show. How wonderful. Maybe they will even put a few Soap Operas on just for you on Sunday or Monday night. Of course you will still be saturated with the Bill Foster, Norm Sloan, Dean Smith and Carl Tacy Shows as well as the (great) ACC contests. Still you won’t have to worry about seeing those big neck brawny and mostly black bodies running up and down the court at break neck speeds played especially since Maryland and North Carolina State have already played their two regular season games for the season. As for we basketball fans who still feel that the object of basketball is to take it to the hoop well we will just have to run to the Gaines complex and watch the CIAA in action. You see there is just not enough interest jn pro basketball in this area to warrant showiag-of NfiA games on the tube. Guess the four comers is just more exciting to the average slow talking southerner than watching Julius Erving and David Thompson go at it one-on-one. Some of us had rather see Bob McAdoo, Walter Davis, David Thompson and others now than to watch Hawkeye Whitney and Gene Banks battle for a chance at not being seen in the area in a few years. This writer wonder if anybody else is tired of hearing Enos’Country’ Slaughter cry sour grapes about not making it to the Hall of Fame. Maybe he deserves to be in the Hall but Jackie Robinson deserved to be in the Major Leagues too. Well, WSSU football fans can rest a little easier than they could last week since Howard University has not selected Bill Hayes as their new football coach. Now that Floyd Keith has been hired there and Bill Davis has taken over at South Carolinal State that means that there are two down and four to go. The guess here is that ‘Wild Bill’ will be back at the helm of the football Rams again in 79. Our condolences go to all other coaches in the CIAA. Thank God for Ken Free and his new Leadership of the MEAC. There are a number of basketball fans that were praying for the MEAC and CIAA tourneys to be held at different times this year and that prayer has been answered. The MEAC tourney is set for February 22 through the 24 in Greensboro while the CIAA event is set for March 1 through 3. Let’s see now.
