However, for man to fulfil the law of his being, the incomprehensible God had to manifest Himself. Hence the doctrine of God's knowability. God revealed something ofllis wisdom and power in creation, especially His eternity and sovereign will since He who made all things must be self-existent and eternal, and preserves them for no other cause than His own good pleasure (Rev. 4:11). Both day and niaht reveal His olorv as if thev had tnnonM tr? #?iir w -- ?- o?j ? ? J ?%w (Ps.l9:l,2). Thus, He so manifests "his perfections in the whole structure of the universe, and daily places himself in our view, that we canhot open our eyes without being compelled to behold him" (John Calvin). Daily providence evidences God's paternal care and all-sufficiency in governing, guiding, protecting, and supplying man's needs. The Apostle Paul testified, "He (God) left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with foods and gladness" Acts 14:17. God also stamped his knowledge into man's very soul. Tertullian affirmed, "From the very beginning a consciousness of God was given to the soul." For Calvin, "There exists in the human mind, and indeed by natural instinct, some sense of ' -Deity...the memory of which (God) constantly revews and occasionally enlarges.^ Conscience, God's messenger in the heart, also teaches man that this God governs by laws of right and wrong, and punishes the disobedient and rewards the upright. => God, forseeing that sin would darken man's knowledge of Him in creation, providence, and the human soul, gave the Bible wherein His character and works are estimated not by depraved judgment, but by eternal truth. The Bible reveals His spiritual nature of ineffable holiness, justice, goodness, truth, wisdom, and power as "a character worthy of a God" (James Boyce). Thus holy Scripture instructs men in the sure marks that distinguish God from erroneous representations of Him by false religions. Scripture and conscious bore witness to God's holiness and hatred of sin, but nothing of redeerfiftig love. Mankind remained in doubt and ignorance of its manifestation. Socrates remarked, "It may be that the Deity can forgive sing, but I don't ~ know how!Did God's love need to be proved? "Yes, as all paganism shows: Gods vicious, careless, cruel, beautiful there were in abundance; but where is there a god who loves?" (Alexander McLaren). In Jesus Christ, God gave the highest revelation of His wisdom, power, and eternal love. "In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because He sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him" 1 John 4:9. Jesue said, "He that hath seen me, hath seen the Father" John 14:9. James C. McMUIIan, Minister of Education Sunday School 9x50 t.m.
