Here another of those seeming trifles that have unexpected results. Here is the explanation. Photographic film, without which we would have neither snapshots nor movies, is made of gelatin into which minute grains of a chemical called* silver bromide have been embedded. But until the significance of cows and mustard was understood. no oqe knew why one tatch of gelatin when treated with silvet bromide would produce sensitized film while another, batch, similarly treated and produced under identical conditions, was useless for photography. Gelatin is made from the skins of calves. First, slabs of calfskin are treated with lime for several weeks. Next, these slabs are washed with acid and water. Then they are boiled. Finally, the gelatinous liquid is cooled to a jelly and dried. The final result is gelatin. In an effort to discover why only some batches of gelatin would become sensitized when treated; research scientists traced back the steps of manufacture in their laboratories. In this way it was found that the acid and water solutions used to wash what turned out the good gelatin contained a residue that the other did not. After several unsuccessful attempts to identify it, that residue was recognized as being wild mustard! Only the skins of animals that had been eating wild mustard and thus absorbed mustard oil in their systems produced sensitized photographic nlm! Once th^ secret was learned, technicians were able to treat the product with synthetic mustard oil and thus "sake all batches of gelatin good r<^their purposes. But. had it not b ?^h4tthe appetite of cows and calve? iirctaded a liking for wild mustardH there would have been no photographs and no 'movies. % lassi State of North Carolina ) Forsyth County ) Rubye Watson Long, ) Petitioner ) vs- ) Converse Bernard Long, ) Respondent ) In The General Court Of Justice Superior Court Division Before The Clerk tm m m rv ar NOTICE OF SALE Under and by virtue of an order of the Clerk/of Superior Court of Forsyth County, North Carolina, entered November 19, 1979 in the above captioned matter, the undersigned cocommissioners will offer for public sale at the Main Street door, Forsyth County Hall of Justice, WinstonSalem, Forsyth County, North Carolina to the last and highest bidder for cash at 12:00 o'clock p.m. on the 15th day of February, 1980, the following described real, l..J s- n it.' vawic ijrmg 111 rursyui County, North Carolina, and being more particularly described as follows: Being known and -designated as Lot No. 6, Block "1" as shown on Map of Castle Heights, first part of Section 2, as recorded in Plat Book 19, page 34 in the Office of the Register of Deeds of Forsyth County, North Carolina, xeference to which is hereby made for a more particular description.
