The Gospel of God 9 '> st The Apostle Paul wrote to the Colossian church concerning the "word of the truth of the gospel," Col. 1:S. Frightful errors HlH arlt#n aknut ...k.E. 1 * BVv?> uiv auvnauti ?n uic gmpci< rcicr ana juac warned of "false teachers...who shall bring in damnable heresies," and urged Christians to "earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints," 2 Pet. 2:1; Jude 3. Today's Church is menaced by errors concerning what exactly is the gospel. The cause of God and truth and the love of Christ constrains us to expose error and set forth briefly the true gospel of God. The chief perversion of the gospel consists of adding to it. These additions may vary from baptism in some special name (partkulary "Jesus only"), church membership/communion supper, good works, Saturday, church attendance, and " ibftenience from certain foods I(or any legalistic duties to earn merit before God). Neither Old nor New believers were saved because of any works whether moral or ceremonial. The dying thief entered glory by simple repentance toward God and faith in Christ. Paul protested, "I do not frustrate the grace of God, for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ died in vain," Gal. 2:21. Liberal Christianity errs by leaving out portions of the gospel which are offensive to the cultured, unconverted sinner. This may consist of omitting the shedding of Christ's blood, or the denials of His sinless humanity, His Godhood, or glorious resurrection^ These liberal exhort men to "follow Jesus' example," whereas fallen men have not that ability apart from ' divine grace. A third misunderstanding results from confounding sanctification with justification. This is to make our justification depend upon our sanotification such that we are righteous and secure as long as we believe ourselves to be holy. However, justification is an once-for-all declaration that Christ trusting sinners are righteous while santifkation is a life long work within justified sinners by the Holy Spirit "until Christ be formed in you," Gal. 4:19. These above errors mainly stem from a profound isnorance of man's guilt, pollution, and utter ruin by ruin: "Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one," Job 14:4. Nor is God's ineffable holiness and justice properly seen or His unsearchable wisdom perceived. "If it be asked, how can it stand with God's justice and holiness to pronounce us innocent when we are guilty? The answer is, that Christ having made satisfaction for our fault, God may, in equity and justice, pronounce us righteous." (Thomas Watson). This is true Good News of God. No more, my God, 1 boast no more Of all the duties I have done; I quit the hopes I held before. To Trust the merits of Thy Son.
