Bonds has placed in the Maior Leagues si nee 19^8 when he broke in with San Francisco. last year, he played for Cleveland, batting .275 with 25 homers. His best rears might have been 1970-76 or so. In '70, he batted a career high .302 with 26 homers while playing for San Francisco. In '73, he had 39 homers while batting .283 for the Giants. Bonds is the only plaver in major league history to hit 30 or more home runs and steal 30 or -more base* in the same season. He did it five times. Q. Who do ihe pros rate as the best running back ever to play in the NFL ? A. Tom Landry thinks O.J. Simpson was the best. I agree. Q. I'm interested in following some black college players who are now in the Canadian hoot bait League. Will any of the CFL games be televised in the United States? A. Yes. The Entertainment Sports Programming Network has plans to carry about 39 CFL games this season. ESPN is offered only through cable systems. To find out if ESPN is carried in your area, just call your local cable systems. ESPN is the only 24-hour sports service in America. Q. Is Ted Turner hiring any black sportscasters for his new all-news network? A. Probably not, at least for right now. Turner's new network is called the Cable News Network, and has completed -most -of -it s-htrmgi Q. I have two questions concerning the Tampa Bay , Buccaneers. First of all, I have heard that Tampa Bay may have the most blacks in the National Football League. Is this true? And also, have you ever met Lerov .Selmon ? What kind of guy is he and where could I write to him? A* Yes, Tampa Bay does have the "blackest" team in pro football. Seventeen of the Bucs 22 starters next fall may be black. But that doesn't bother Tamna Rav Crunch John McKay. He says all the Bites' players are good citizens, and adds that's all that matters. Yes, I've met Selmon once. He's one of the most likeable players in the NFL. You can write him at One Buccaneer Place, Tarnp'a, Fla., 33607. The last closed circuit telecast here was the Ali-lnoki match some years back. The last real closed circuit bout was the "Thriler in Manilla". Attesting to Leonard's drawing power, Johnson says, "SugarRayis the only fighter I know who could command a closed circuit bout at this time. I don't even know if Ali could do it now unless he was fighting for the title." Tickets for the bout "pretty much reflect inflation," comments Johnson who recalls that the Last closed circuit bout tickets sold for $10 and $12 while for this match only general admission tickets will be available and they will cost $12.50 until Friday with fight night tickets swelling to $15. The gates of the Coliseum will open at 8 p.m. with the first fight between Roger Leonard and Clyde Gray (not the former WX11 newsman) beginning at 9. Following that bout John Tate will begin his comeback against T? n ?i-i i icvur DeruicK. It is possible that local favorite Irvin Hines could be seen on the_card if two first round KO's occur. The contest will begin at 10:35. "I don't know of ^anywhere in the area other than here where the fight will be shown. 1 know Greensboro is not carrying it and with the interest we have had from down south I don't think Charlotte will have it either," added Johnson. To make sure that the closed circuit show is the only one in any town there wtH be no live radio coverage and a 30 day blackout on TV with ABC set to show the fight late in July. My pick, well 1 like Leonard but not at 9 to 5. Duran will "have to score a knockout to win, but if Leonard doesn't slay oui of the way of his powerful punches for the full 15 or until he has hit him with enough combinations to wear him down the new king could fall.
