LLyou are_a_hlack college sports fan I'm sure you.enjoyed
reading the scores of various tournaments in Sundays
paper as much as this writer did.
a; A recap of those scores might give an indication that
there arc more than a few black college teams that can
play with the so called "big boys" in division 1 this
season.
Take Florida A&M for instance, the Rattlers were on
the bottom of the MEAC at the end of last season and
even though they were the surprise of the conference
tournament, nobody expected them to make any big
. ? 4waves this season. But Josh Giles, a disciple of the legendary
"Bighouse" Gaines, the man who recommended
him to FAMU, has already put a big feather in his cap for
the pew season.
This past weekend the Rattlers played in the Hatter

Appalachian State, a team that went to the NCAA
tourney two years ago, was beating Butler in the consolation
game, the FAMU team was sitting back waiting for
their shot at Stetson in the finals. Wnfen the time came
they took care of business, beating Stetson 80-74 before a
shell shocked crowd to win the tournament championMeanwhile,
Virginia State, a team that failed to make
the CI A A tourney last season, was losing to Richmond in
the finals of the Spider Classic. Nobody expected the
Trojans to get past the first round.
In the Norman Ward Invitational, Central State was
the winner while St. Augustine's won the Sea Gull
Classic. ?
An even bigger eye opener was the way Jackson State
handled Howard. The Bison had received mention in
more than one magazine as one of the nations top 50
teams before the season began but Jackson clobbered
them 91-74 putting their name at the head of the black
college list.
Back on the home front. Wake Forest did a job on
both North Carolina State and UNC in the Big Four and
moved into the top 20 nationally. Beating division Ul
teams Johns Hopkins and John Carroll by as many as 50
points didn't hurt Wake's reputation either but it would
have been much more interesting if they had scheduled a
Jackson or Howard or even North Carolina A&T for that
matter.

Rams Face NC
By Sam Carey
Special to the Chronicle
The Rams will face N.C. Central and Norfolk State
this week without the services of their young freshman
center, James Mitchell, who suffered a severe knee injury
in last Saturday's practice. Ricky Wright will also be in
sub-par condition due to an ankle injury in last week's
game against Winthrop.
The casualties come at a time when the Rams appeared
to be "jelling'Vinto an effective unit. Mitchell scored a
season's high 14 points and nine rebounds against Winthrop
while Wright added II valuable points coming off
the bench. The freshman will be out indefinitely
however, Wright is expected to see limited service against
Norfolk State.
As expected, the Eagles will hold a substantial height
advantage over the Rams in addition to the experience of
Donald Sinclair and David Bishop, both seniors. Coach
Clements is also starting an outstanding freshman
recruit, Charles Murphy, a 6'7 center from Maxton, N.C.
Their record, one win in four starts, does not really indicate
a weak team. Sinclair and Bishop are in the top
seven scorers and the team ranks 5tfvin rebounding in the
NA1A District 26,December 8 ratings. In four games, the
Eagles have averaged 78 points, an edge of 3 points over
the Rams. It will surely be a tough game in McDougald's

CU-Norfolk St.
Gym on Tuesday night.
The Spartans come to the Coliseum carrying a 3 and 1
record as of December 7. As always, Coach Mitchell's
team can put the ball in the basket and they seem to enjoy
beating the Rams. It will be the kind of game the fans enjoy
with inside and outside shooting and scoring.
McCray led the Rams to a one-sided victory in Norfolk
last December so the Spartans are certainly coming for
revenge. The two games wilt end the conference preholiday
schedule. The Aggies Holiday Classic,Dec. 19-20
will provide the Rams the opportunity to gain more experience
and also additional time to adjust to each other.
The Ramettes won their first game of the season .last
Friday defeating St. Augustine's College 85 to 77. The
team had lost six in a row and needed the win to bolster a
very low morale. Pamela Glenn, Vanessa Smith and Betty
Drake led the attack on the Lady Falcons doubling the
score in the second half before the reserves took over.
Coach Wallace's team lost again on Saturday night to
Elon College to bring the record to 1 and 7. The preholiday
schedule closes Wednesday night against High
Point College.
The WSSU wrestling team split two matches to bring
their pre-holiday schedule to an end. Mike Edwards'
wrestlers remained unbeaten in the conference by winning
over Livingstone College. A loss to Appalachian State
University in a dual match was the first of the season.
