Page 16.-Thc Chronicle, Saturday, May 9, 1981 ASK BARRY By Barry Cooper K*. Stokesdale Has High Hopes For Season By Robert Eller Sports Editor Q. Can you tell me what records Hank Aaron set with the Atlanta Braves? Also, how can I write to him?-Joe Smalls, Miami. A. Hammerin’ Hank’s records are too numerous to list here. Some of those records, however, include most games (3,076), most home runs (733), most home runs with bases filled (16), most stolen bases (240) and highest slugging percentage (.567). You can write Aaron at P.O. Box 4064, Atlanta, Ga. 30302. Q. / read where the NBA sent around question blanks for people to fill out. Is it true that they asked if white folks would come out to see blacks play?-Ms. Linda Jackson, Burgaw, N.C. A. The NBA did send out questionnaires, and yes, the league did ask if the racial makeup of the league has something to do with declining attendance. Some NBA basketball observers are worried that whites won’t come out to cheer teams that are predominantly black. The NBA has some other problems, also, however. Ticket prices, as much as $18 in some cities, are too high. It would help immensely, though, if a few more white superstars came into the league. Q. Has Leon Spinks signed for another fight?-John Cook, Tallahassee, Fla. A. Spinks has signed to fight Larry Holmes for the World Boxing Council heavyweight title. The bout had been set for May 22 in Las Vegas, but it has been postponed and will be moved to another city. Both sides requested the move. It now looks as if the bout will be held in Detroit. (Got a sports question? Just write Ask Barry, P. O. Box 486, Tallahassee, Eta.) The Stokesdale A’s sent a warning to the top semi pro teams in the state two weekends ago when they beat the Winston-Salem Pond Giants, the nations oldest semi pro baseball team, in the opener of hte Pond Giants 67th season. Lewis Manns, only 23 but also in his tenth semi pro season, will also play the outfield and bat in the leadoff spot. Gene Frazier, the 17 year-old son of Allison, will also play in the outfield. He already has six years of semi pro experience begin ning his career with the A’s as an 11 year old. And according to owner and general manager Alli son Frazier the win was no fluke. “We expect to have a fine season this year and I can’t think of a better way to start it off than with a Chester Vernon, the teams junk throwing ace was 14-4 last year and is back as the teams top righthanded starter. Along with Vernon, Frazier feels he has the best pitching staff he has ever put toget her. win over the Pond Giants. That is the first time a team I have ever been associated with has beaten a Nelson Petree coached team.” Frazier has almost totally revamped the team in the past two seasons and has only five players form a few years ago on the squad this season. Lefthander Johnny Hod ges, also a fine firstbase- man, is expected to be the top starting southpaw. Righty Tommy Farrington, a sophomore at Pembroke, has had his fastball clocked at 96 miles per hour and will probably be hte teams third starter. Guilford College grad 4-H ’ers Win Top Honors By Jimmy Tart Special to the Chronicle The Forsyth County 4-H Clubs and two Forsyth safety program leaders have received top awards from the North Carolina Safety Council. George William Dull of Lewisville, captain of the Vien na Rescue Squad, received the 1981 Rescue Squad and Emergency Medical Services Member Award. Odell R. Downs, 1513 Turfwood Dr., Pfafftown, won the In dividual Adult Volunteer Award. RENTS PARTY SUPPLIES Lavoris Jackson Completes Basic Training By Yvonne Anderson Staff Writer Lavoris Jackson, a native of Winston-Salem, was one of the first all women’s unit to complete Individual Com bat Training for the United States Marine Corp on Paris Island, South Carolina. Jackson, 18 and a graduate of Parkland High School, said, “1 was kind of scared because we were handling M-16’s and hand-grenades, but it wasn’t as bad as 1 thought it would be.” She said that she wants to travel as far and to as many places as she can while making a career in the Marine Corp. Jackson will be stationed at Camp LeJeune, N.C. and work in the motor transport unit. “1 missasome of the friends 1 made in bootcamp, but it was all worth it,” Jackson said. “Graduation was worth it; it was a great feeling.” Anthony Howerton will be the top relief man with help form Guilford junior Ed Smith who was the winner in the Pond Giant game. Steve Smith a St. Augus tine’s College grad will be the second baseman and Frazier says he has a potent bat as well. The team could be even stronger if former star Eddie Adams returns to the team. Adams led the Winston-Salem Baseball League in hitting in both 78 and 79 and is a fine defensive thirdbaseman, having played triple A ball for the Baltimore Orioles organization. “Like I said we will be real strong this year. We lost a couple of games this weekend while a lot of our young players were in school but they will be out this week and we will be at full strength from that point on,” says Frazier who says wile he is presently retired, does not rule out the possi bility of climbing back in uniform if the need arises during the season.
