An avid golfer himself, Rose played in the Living stone College United Negro College Fund Benefit Tour nament and enjoys playing when his schedule permits. “Golf is very relaxing,” he said, “1 really can relieve a lot of tension out there hitting that ball.” When contacted about the Head Coaching position at Livingstone, Rose said, “It was a very difficult deci sion, because 1 had a great working relationship with Coach Davis, the players, school officials and the community; however, 1 knew the challenge of being a Head Coach, the tradition of Livingstone College, having remained steadfast for over 100 years due to members of the A.M.E. Zion Church, who strug gled to fulfill their mission, was a tremendous motiva ting factor.” Bill Davis said this when asked about his former assistant, “Mel certainly made a significant contri bution to our program and to the lives of the young men and women he came into contact with; he has a great sense of humility and integrity.” Davis further elaborated, “Livingstone and college football will benefit through the dedica tion, perseverance and lea dership of Mel Rose as a Head Coach.” Since arriving in Salis bury, Rose has already become a popular member of the community, working as a Little League umpire and advisor. Recent efforts to revive the Livingstone Athletic Booster Club have been accelerated, as Rose hosted a backyard bar-b- cue and kicked off what is becoming a successful membership drive. “1 like doing things with my family and friends,” and that family includes his wife, the former Doris Mil ler of Charlotte, N.C. and daughter, Nia Malika, “It is so important to maintain the family,’ he said; “We enjoy cooking, going to church, picnicking and just spending time together.” “When I go into an ath lete’s home, I try to empha size to him that respect for authority, proper manners, hard work, along with ap preciation and concern for our elders are really impor tant,” he said. “I want parents to under stand that if I recruit their son, he will be well disci plined, well behaved and working towards a college degree or he won’t be around very long,” Rose stressed.
