Page 8-The Chronicle, Saturday, July 25, 1981 4th Brings Classes Together One of the largest Social Events of the histofy of Mt. Airy was held Saturday night at the National Guard Armory. J.J. Jones High School classes frOm 1938 to 1966 gathered to celebrate an exciting homecoming, A Banquet catered by Mrs. Annie B. Overby of Mt. Airy was the opening event. The highlight of the affair was the honoring of the Principal, Mr. Leonidus H. Jones, and former teacher, Mrs. Laura S. Johnson. Entertaining were the Brief Encounters from North Wilkesboro, N.C. The first song set the pace, which was celebration. The Master of Ceremonies was William Price Tatum, a 1958 graduate, from Winston-Salem, N.C. The chairlady and organizer was Claudette Bowman Taylor of Hyattsville, Maryland. She is a 1962 graduate and is employed by the Chief Judge of Superior Court, Washington, D.C. On her committee were the follow ing: Opal S. Hughes Watkins, Wilma Strickland Wilkerson, Linda Pilson Taylor, Ernest Dobson, Jr., Kenneth Rawley, Juanita Bowman Tatum, Evelyn Tatum Smith, Rebecca Thompson Hamilton, Nan cy L. Bowman, Clifford Cutton, James Jessie C. Dyson Madge Moore "James O. Travis. The program consisted of an opening with the singing of the Negro National An them. A welcome address was given by Mr. Charles Thompson, Assistant Prin cipal of J.J. Jones Elemen tary, response by Geraldine Taylor Parham, Cherry Hill, N.J. The history of J.J, Jones was given by Mrs. Arlene Strickland Harlyard of San Jose, California, who scouted the courthouse, history and remarks about Mrs. Laura Sue Johnson, Mrs. Linda Pilson Taylor presented her with a plaque. Each teacher present who taught there was introduced and presented a certificate, as follows: Ms. Evelyn Scales, Mrs. Daisy Richard son Chapman, Mr. W.A. Bryant, Sr., Mrs. Bernese Witherspoon, Mrs. Gladys Bailey, Ms. Cordelice A. Nance, Ms. Virginia Galloway, Ms. G.L Jones, Mrs. Loris Hilton, Mr. Earl C. Setzer, Jr., Mrs. Queenie Moore Kitrel, Mr. Joseph Bradshaw, Mrs. Irene Carr ington. A Moment of Silence meditation in memory of the deceased was done with the Lighting of a Candle by Juanita B. Tatum, preceding comments by Mrs. Daisey B. Chapman of Glen Arden, Maryland. Ms. Taylor, chairwoman, introduced the committee members and thanked all of them as well as the classes for co-operating so beautifully. A special thanks was given to the Strickland Funeral Home for the beautiful Souvenir Program and to the Na tional Guard Armory for their support and coopera tion. The Committee presented Mrs. Taylor with a bouquet of roses for her efforts in getting this affair together. They also presented her with a year book of J.J. Jones School. Her son, Vincent Taylor, was presented a gift for assisting the Committee in the errands and decorating. Also thanked the teenage hosts and hostesses who were: Tammy Travis, Wen dy Taylor, Monica Odom, Vincent Taylor, William P. Tatum, Jr., Lindsay G. Bowman, Jr., Warren Smith IV, and Subrennia D. Bowman. Among graduates were Mrs. Sybil Thompson, who came the furthest, from Germany. She was presented a gift. Mrs. Grade Dyson and Mrs. An nie B. Overby were remembered with a large plant from the group. Ending tf|e activities for the weekend was a picnic at Tanglewood Park in Clem-' mons, N.C. where families of the graduates and their guests participated in golf, ball games and swimming. This historical event will never be forgotten by those attending, as all comments were favorable. Salem Summer Streetscene Travis, Pattdn, Hayes, school system and records, as well as talking to senior citizens of this area to con firm the history. Mrs. Opal Hughes Watkins presented the former Principal, Mr. Jones, who served 44 years with this system a plaque. Mrs. Jessie Carol Dyson Patton presented the Storytelling At East Winston By Beverly McCarthy Staff Writer “Once upon a time,” began the story teller, as over 15 glaring children at tentively listened. When the “happily ever after” came, everybody applauded. It was storytime at the East Winston branch of the For syth County Public Library. Pat Stepney is Children’s Librarian in East Winston and has a genuine interest in developing reading and communication skills in children. The program is designed to strengthen the listening, reading and communication skills of its participants. “Not only is a story told to them, but they must tell a Story also; each child has access to a library card, and must check out books; this helps their reading and communication, explained Stepney. The program is held every Thursday from 3 to 4:00 p.m., and is open to children from 6 to 10. In an interview with the librarian. Stepney said, “We invite all children to come in and enjoy our storytelling and books at the East Winston Library.” Marshall W. Bass, right, director, personnel development for R.J.
