The Worth of A Quarter
by Bertha C. Tucker
It was late one Sunday afternoon
Off in the distance
Came the sound of music
it was the Good Humor Man.
The music brought little children
Running across lawns
Up streets and all around
Shouting with glee
Puppy dogs were barking
And running close to their feet
Big wheels were squeaking
All over the street.
Everyone was calling to their Mama, Daddy
“Here comes the ice cream man
Please buy me a cone.”
I reached for my purse and
Took out four quarters and
Gave them to folir kids and said
“Go out and buy you one.”
One little boy tapped me
On my knee
And said sadly,
“Grandmother don’t you know
One cone cost almost a dollar
You can’t buy anything with a (quarter).
Mies and gentlemen...
The Master’s Portrait
by Carolyn Jackson
Rembrant could never had painted a portrait
As beautiful as the one I see.
When little dark faces smile up at me.
The beauty personified in their soul.
The awareness that flashes in their eyes.
Tells me—-NO, the master has not died.
ttlmes it’s necessary to cry...

The Man With The Guitar And The Man With The Horn: Columbia recording group
Santana climaxed a series of New York City area concerts with a special one night stand
at the Savoy in Manhattan — there first club appearance here since October 1978. In at
tendance for the night was a long-time Santana admirer, Miles Davis (whose new Col
umbia album is forthcoming this summer)— the admiration was mutual, of course, as
Devadip Carlos Santana and the band were heard quoting liberally from the Miles

The History of Jazz
Tears For The Master
by Raye Israel, c. 1978
Nobody really knows why I cry
Nobody really knows why you cry
Nobody but God Almighty.
Deep thoughts and deep pains
Hunger, a deep search but still
Nobody knows but God.
We live this life, lying
To the reasons why we are here.
But we live and we love.
Though we hate, we are searching
But still, nobody knows
But God The Master
1 think there is a cry in all of us
Though some of us shed no tears
And it is called the cry of the desparate
being.
And man is nothing more
Than a desperate being
Who is in search of help
Searching for someone or
Something to give him
Answers and reasons.
Now, tell me, who’s going to hear my cry?
Nobody
And who’s going to listen to my pain?
Not anyone
Who’s going to see my tears?
Nobody
Nobody but God,,nobody but the Lord
Nobody but the master.
My tears for the master.

To The Loved-Ones In Your Life
by Bill Jackson
Thank you Lord, for giving me another
chance.
Thank you for the blessings, only you could
finance.
Thank you for my family, who rushed by my
side.
Thank you for my friends, whose feelings
could not hide.
1 was flat on my back and couldn’t get up.
When I needed a drink, 1 couldn’t hold the
cup.
But all that’s changed; for now I’m well.
Thank you for giving me this story to tell.

Jazz is America’s most
indigenous musical art
form. It is human emotion
put to music. It is years of
sacrifice and dedication to a
dream and a feeling. It is a
musical seed planted in 20th
Century American culture
which has both mirrored
and helped to shape that
culture.
The history of jazz is the
story and the music is the
message in an un
precedented performance-
oriented musical scries,
“Jazz-America,” which ,
will ultimately encompass
the entire history of jazz.
The series, which will be
broadcast nationally on
PBS and National Public
Radio, \yill preiuicre with

Brothers Johnson
“The Winners”
Quincy Jones discovered these blood brothers and
produced them until this LP. Producing their own
material has not taken anything from the original
style. With Louis Johnson bn bass and George on
lead guitar, this is probably song by song, their best.
album. “The real thing” is the new single and is an
Uptempo mover. Other good cul.s are “Dancin
Free,” “1 Want You” and
‘Caught Up” is a real
winner.
