"That's what my tax man [old me after he got done with my taxes," Shoaf says. Making big bucks hasn't :ome easily, though. "I've been in the bonding business, I would say, 25 years." Before Shoaf became a licensed bondsman, he says, he would often pay bail for his co-workers at Reynolds and others. 44I always saved (money).'* he recalls. "When I was working in the factory, folks knew I had money and I'd bail them out." And he's still posting bond for various people. However, today he charges his clients 15 percent of the total fee. 44I have to put up a certain amount of collateral with the state," Shoaf says. "I can cover $300,000 in bonds, not for one person, but for diffcrent people." Shopf is a bondsman for criminal and traffic violations.
