Reliance began its fight against
Tz poverty in Winston-Salem 20
years ago in 1964 amid much
js? skepticism and many hardships.
Over the years the skeptics and
J- the hardships were overcome.
^ * ESR has had to prove itself time
zz and time again. But now, it is
highly regarded not only in
Winston-Salem, but throughout
the state.
At a banquet and dinner on _
Friday, Oct. 19, the Experiment
l'z . in Self-Reliance officially
celebrated its 20 years of service.
The Experiment in SelfReliance
was established in 1964
i.. to administer^ grant fron the
North Carolina Fund. It was
designated by Forsyth County as
f ' a Community Action Ageftcy in
1965 in order to apply for funds
available throught&he Economic
Opportunity Act in 1964. ESR
received its first OEO funds in
Department of Health and
Human Services, the Department
\ of Housing and Urban Development,
as well as local governGroups

Marine Sgt. David R. Jones,
; son of David R. and Eurethia L.
Jones of Ivy Avenue, was recently
awarded the U.S. Marine
Corps Good Conduct Medal.
Jones received the award for
good behavior and conduct over
a three-year period in the Marine
Corps.

Reynolds High School, he joined

Marine 2nd Lt. Paul V. Martin,
son of Paul V. and Barbara
Martin of 4375 Byrn Mawr Lane,
has reported for duty with the Second
Marine Aircraft Wing at the
Marine Corps Air Station Cherry
Point.
A 1977 graduate of R.J.
Reynolds High School, he joined
the Marine Corps in May 1983.

were present and were recognized
for their contributions to the
overall success of the program. >
Louise Wilson, the executive
director, said, "I promised I was
not going to cry," but made it
plain that ESR has a special place
in her heart.
The dinner and banquet was
followed by a cocktail party
hosted by Mrs. Wilson and other
employees of the program.
