It is that benefit, bon feels, that makes Kwan- tspecially important for black lericans. Kwanza extends into the iic fiber of the family,” toon says. “It extends beyond lasic celebration because it en- itages people to re-dedicate jnselves to basic family prin- Its, such as unity and collec- work.” lackson says Kwanza is a com- lation of social and religious icepts and is mostly family- rated. lecause it carries with it a se of heritage, Jackson feels mza should be part of black Idren’s overall development, also says that children should laught at a young age about :African celebration and what Beans. lackson strongly believes in the anza celebration, and the op- tunity to share his knowledge 1 insight of the relatively new Iday excites him. He sees anza not only as a festive oc- ion but also as a chance for d Americans to get back in ich with their history. A lot of our history is lost ause we don’t talk about it fBiore,” he says. “If we start ling about Kwanza and about at it really means, we’ll get lie into our own history as a iple. Kwanza allows blacks to down and reflect on where lycame from. Kwanza, in my Biion, has far-reaching impacts our knowing who we are.” A Kwanza celebration will lin be held at the East Winston irary on Tuesday, Dec. 31, ® 8 to 10 p.m. Participants tasked to bring a covered dish, •th will help re-create the Wza feasts that took place in iiica, It is good that black children know about other ethnic holidays, says Jackson, but it is also important that they know about their own celebrations. “We know about everyone else’s culture,” Jackson says. “We know more about ourselves than anybody else, and we need to re-dedicate ourselves to teaching our children about our culture and having self-respect. We celebrate everyone else’s holi day, and we know about all the other holidays. We have a responsibility to celebrate Kwan za. This holiday is ours.” AFTER- CHRISTMAS CLEARANCE STARTS TODAY Jan’s at Noithside temporarily ciosed FASHION OUTLET FAMOUS-LABEL FASHION OUTLET South Main Street 788-9236 Clemmons 766-8162 Mt.
