'; One of Winston-Salem State's
best football trips in the fall will
bis to Howard in Washington,
p.C. The Bison will be playing in
a ,new 7,500-seat Astroturf
stadium.
Howard, which averaged
15,000 fans in four home games
last year, plays host to the Rams
Oct. 11. The game will be
Howard's homecoming.
Last year, WSSU, one of the
top teams in Division II, won
12-7 on quarterback Bobby
Junior's 14-yard scamper with 40
seconds left in the contest. A ~
. young Howard team, being
rebuilt by the venerable Willie
Jeffries, played one of its best
games of the season, only to suf
fer from critical lapses late in the
fourth quarter.
College Poop
Gayle Sayers apparently is
one of the names being tossed
around as a possible successor to
Howard Athletic Director Leo F.
Mfles, who will retire June 30.
Sayers, the Pro Football Hall of
Famer, currently is interim AD at
Tennessee State ....
The MEAC feels its chances
are good at acquiring an

I-AA football playoff. A decision
is expected Aug. 1.
The conference now has the required
number (six) of teams
playing football after playing
with five for several years. The *
history of several of the con
ferencc's programs probably
merits such a berth. Yetf the
MEAC's overall strength is questionable
and, with the exception
of Delaware State, no school has
maintained a high standard of excellence
in recent seasons. Still,
an automatic berth to the national
playoffs would probably
improve some of the schools'
commitments to football....
The city of Jackson, Miss.,
honored its leading citizen May

Grambling State alumnus
n i ?im j?? has signed up for
his 18th NFL season. The-;
39-year-old Joiner (came ,to
terms on a contract after catching
61 passes last season. Joiner, who
has caught more passes than
anyone in NFL history, needs only
129 yards to catch Don
Maynard as pro football's alltime
receiving-yardage leader ....
In basketball recruiting,
Betrice Wright of Greensboro
Smith has signed with St.
Augustine's. As a senior, Wright
averaged 10 points and seven rebounds
for the Lady Eagles ....
WSSU football recruit
Glenn McKenzte took second in
the shot put at the NCHSAA
championships in Raleigh last
week ....
Former West Forsyth
basketball player Sterling Charles
hopes to play with North
Carolina A&T next season.
Charles has been working out
with several members of the Aggie
basketball team. A rising
sophomore, Charles did not play
as a freshman so He could concentrate
on academics ....
The Aggies have not retained
women's basketball Coach Joyce

of her contract. A&T posted a

Baseball Notes
In case he doesn't sign after
the June draft, Howard first
baseman J.B. Baynes has decided
to play in the prestigious Shenandoah
Valley League this summer.
Baynes, the former all-stater at
Greensboro Grimsley, batted

He won two games and had nine
hits in 15 at-bats while leading the

Jackson State finished the
season with a 34-20 record after
being eliminated in the South
Regional of the NCAA World
Series. The Tigers lost to LSU
14-11 in the first round in the latter's
own stadium and lost to
Louisiana Tech 14-6 in the second
round ....

Patrick Lennon is considered one
