I* j Military Not?? Pender dej Navy Seaman Derrick R. Pender is currently participating in a five-month Western Pacific deployment aboard the battleship USS New Jersey, which has its home port in Long Beach, Calif. The New Jersey will lead six other ships on the first battle group to deploy to the Western Pacific since the Korean War. A 1984 graduate of East For sytn High School, Pender joined the Navy in November 1984. Navy Seaman Donald J. Charlton has completed recruit training at Recruit Training. Command in Orlando, Fla. During the eight-week training cycle, Charlton studied general military subjects designed to prepare him for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic fields. His studies included seamanship, close-order drill, naval history and first aid. Personnel who complete die course are eligible for three hours of college credit in physical education and hygiene. Charlton, a 1977 graduate of k.j. Reynolds High School, joined the Navy in August 1985. Navy Airman Recruit Gregory R. Coger recently reported for duty with the precommissioning unit aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, based at Newport News, Va. A 1984 graduate of North ForUpshaw pays between $24,337 and $33,384 a year. Upshaw's annual salary was $25,833, and he helped prepare budgets and heard employee grievances. Upshaw was responsible for helping the director manage and [pian myrun the department and running the department in the director's absence. He also gave counseling and supervision to the city's sanitation, buildings and grounds, and streets and garage divisions. "It is unfortunate that this particular incident occurred," said Southeast Ward Alderman Larry W. Womble, who is chairman of the Public Works Committee. "He was doing a fantastic job. His work performance was of a high caliber." JCity officials would not comment on Upshaw's conviction. Pit W. Swann, assistant city manager for public works, said no decision has been made on hiring a replacement for Upshaw. I ?Womble said Upshaw's conviction should not reflect on other ci^r employees. f'l don't think it will have a n^ative effect on city politics or th| hiring of blacks in city gdvernment," Womble said. New tome has been promoted to his present rank while serving at Marine Corps Base at Camp Pendleton, Calif. The son of Stella C. Newsome of Winston-Salem, he joined the Marine Corps in June 1968. Navy Seaman Recruit Timothy A. Wilson has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command in San Diego. During Wilson's eight-week training cycle, he studied general military subjects designed to prepare him for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic fields. The son of Melven V. Bryan of Winston-Salem, Wilson joined the Navy in February. Marine Cpl. Michael T. Jones recently completed the Noncommissioned Officer Leadership Course. During the course at Marine Corps Base at Camp Lejeune, Jones studied personnel administration, Marine Corps history and traditions, military courtesy, and the principles and techniques of effective leadership.
