LA MARQUE, Texas - Members of the
La Marque school board split along racial
lihes in hiring a white head football coachathletic
director.
Officials from the La Marque branch of
the National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People had protested the
man's hiring as an interim coach, saving that
a black role model was needed.
Still, four board members last week voted
to name Acting Head Coach Larry Nowothy
to succeed Hugh Massey, who died Dec. 4 in
an automobile accident. At that time, the La
Marque football team was fighting for a spot
in the state championship game.
Three black trustees voted against
Nowothy's appointment.
Trustees received a letter from the nearby
