MILITARY NOTES Searcy completes recruit training in Florida NCSA to present annual Mozart concert School of Music faculty from the North Carolina School of the Arts will be featured in the Annual Mozart birthday concert at 8 p.m, Saturday, Jan. 16 in the Stevens Center. This concert, which is a part of the School’s Faculty Artists' Series, will feature the works of the brilliant Austrian composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who lived in the 1700s. The concert is among the Efficient Club ends 1987 agenda The Efficient Club recently held its last three meetings of 1987. The December meeting was held at the home of Madgelene Whlls. The November meeting was held at the home of Theodore Clark in Pilot Mountain and the October meeting was held at the home of Theodosia Patton. At the December meeting new members were installed. During the meeting club business was dis cussed by president Cara Broome, Walls served dinner for the group and Christmas carols were sung. West Forsyth PTA to sponsor careers workshops The West Forsyth PTA will offer an unique opportunity for stu dents to acquire authentic job information and gain respect on Monday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. Parents and others in the com munity will be stationed around the gym to share informally with small groups of students and their par ents, information about their careers. There will be a wide variety of careers represented including those that require technical training or may be learned on the job, as well as those that require a college degree. West Forsyth students are encouraged to attend the seminar and bring their jiarents along. Bus transportation will be pro vided at the following locations: Kennedy Middle School, Atkins Middle School, Hanes Middle School and the Masonic Temple on 14 th Street. most popular of all the music events at the School of the Arts. Highlights of the concert will include: Three Precludes and Fugues" (preludes by Mozart for fugues of J.S. Bach) and "Quartet for Piano and Strings in g minor, K. 478." Both works will feature Elaine Richey, violin; Sally Peck, viola; and Robert Marsh, violon cello. Eric Larsen, piano, will join the trio for the "Quartet." Admission to the concert will be $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens. This is an ARTSCARD event. Searcy, son of Aldine Searcy of 1215 E. 29th St., Winston-Salem, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Orlan do, Fla. During Searcy's eight-week training cycle, he studied general military subjects designed to pre pare him for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic fields. Searcy's studies included sea manship, close order drill. Naval history and first aid. Personnel who complete this course of instruction arc eligible for three hours of college credit in physical education and hygiene. A 1987 graduate of Lakeshorc High School in College Park, Ga., he joined the Navy in September 1987. Marine Lance Cpi. Jeffrey L. Hilton, son of James W. and Ruby A. Hilton of 5120 Butterfield Drive, has been pro moted to his present rank while serving with First Marine Division , Camp Pendleton, Calif. A 1984 graduate of East Forsyth High School in Kern- ersville, he joined the Marine Corps in January 1987. His wife, Aleiu, is the daughter of William B. and Geneava Benton, also of Winston-Salem. Marine Lance Cpl. Walter A. Hunter and Marine Cpl. Janies L. McCray, both of Winston-Salem recently participated in exercise Spanish Phiblex 2-87 while serv ing with 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit, Camp Lejeune. During the exercises Hunter and McCray participated in joint air and surface assaults, followed by cross-training ashore with Spanish Naval infantrymen. They also participated in small unit training, along with crew-served Searcy weapons live-fire exercises. Both are currently participat ing in a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea, conducting operations with NATO allies. Hunter is a 1985 graduate of Parkland High School. He joined the Marine Corps in July 1985. McCray is a 1984 East Forsyth Senior High School graduate. He joined the Marine Corps in July 1987. Navy Seaman Recruit, Donnie A. Ti young man was selected out of field of 150 applicants from Wes em North Carolina. Joyner, 18, will report for eig weeks of basic training at Ft Jackson, S.C. He then will mcei 52 weeks of flight training at F Rucker, Ala. and upon completi of the training will be comm sioned as a warrant officer. Joyner says the idea of flyinj helicopters for the Array eiciie him. "I just wish I could begii sooner," he says. The wait anti January is to accommodate th school schedule. In a conversation with his recruiter, Staff Sgt. Richard Stein of the Winston-Salem Recruiting Sta tion, Joyner provided some addi- tional insight into his decision i enlist "My father was an officer the Marine Corps for thirtei years," said Joyner.
