Yolanda King to speak at Wake Forest
The oldest child of Dr. Marlin
Luther King Jr., and Mrs. Coretia
Scott King, will give a lecture
Sunday (Jan. 24) at Wake Forest
University.
Yolanda King will taUc at 6:30
p.m. in Wait Chapel. The program
is being held for the annual Martin
Luther King birthday celebration.
It is sponsored by the University's
Office of Minority Affairs and is
open free to the public.
Ms. King is on the board of
directors of the Martin Luther
King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent
Social Change, and is a lifetime
member of the N.A.A.C.P. and
Southern Christian Leadership
Conference.
Ms. King, an actress, produc
er, director and lecturer, began a
career which started at the Actor's
and Writer’s Workshop in Atlanta,
where she studied acting, speech
and dance. Ms. King combined
her commitment to social change
with her artistic pursuits. As she
defines it, "While it is imperative
to actively challenge the forces that
deny human beings their right to a
decent life...one must also stimu
late and alter the hearts and minds
of both the privileged, as well as
those who have been too long
denied. Within the arts lies this
power."
Ms. King became a founding
member of Christian Theatre
Artists and has taught theatre to
young people. She also serves as
co-director (with Atiallah Shabazz,
daughter of Malcolm X and Dr.
Betty Shabazz) of NUCLEUS, a
company of performing artists.
Ms. King serves as director of
the King Center's Cultural Affairs
Program and has appeared in sev
eral television productions as an
actress, and has worked as a pro-

Black Repertory to hold auditions for two upcoming shows
The North Carolina Black
Repertory Company announces
auditions for its winter tour of the
poetic drama, "For Colored Girls
Who Have Considered Suicide
When the Rainbow is Enuf." The
play will be louring the southeast
ern United States in February.
Seven actresses and two under
studies are needed.
NCBRC will also be audition
ing actors for its workshop produc
tion of a new play, "Hannah Davis"
by New York playwright Leslie
Lee. The play calls for a cast of
four women and two men.

Nathan F. Simms Jr. named UNC vice president
for student services and special programs
Nathan F. Simms Jr., 55, has
been named vice president for stu
dent services and special programs
for the University of Nor^ Caroli
na.
Simms, a native of Winston-
Salem, and who was elected last
week by the UNC Board of Gover
nors, will assume his new post
Feb. 1. He replaces Lloyd V.
Hackley, who became chancellor
of Fayetteville Slate University
Jan. 1.
Simms, who holds a Ph.D. in
mathematics from Lehigh Univer
sity in Pennsylvania, is no stranger
to the job.
In 1980, he served as acting
vice president in the position he is
now assuming. Since 1981, he has
been vice chancellor for academic
affairs at North Carolina A&T
State University.
Previously, he had been a pro
fessor and chairman of the mathe
matics department at Winston-
Salem Stale University.
Simms earned his undergradu
ate and master's degrees from
North Carolina Cental University.
He has been active in profes
sional and research organizations,
and received a research grant fel
lowship from the National Science
Foundation.
In his new position, Simms
will earn $88,200 per year.
