City residents attend U.S. 88 workshop Guilford Technical Communi ty College recently hosted 75 Triad residents at one of nine citizens' assemblies conducted across the state by U.S. 88 - A New Road to the White House. U.S. 88 is a project sponsored jointly by the Roosevelt Institute for American Policy Studies and the North Carolina Leadership Forum to involve more citizens with politics and public policy. The workshops included two mini-courses on public policy issues and were followed by dis cussions of questions which will be posed to presidential candidates during a meeting scheduled for March in Greensboro. Four federal issues were dis cussed including the spread of nuclear weapons, long term health care, Central America and the bud get deficit. More than 750,000 applica tions were sent out across the state by 25 co-sponsoring organizations in order to involve a wide cross section of state residents. \fernon Robinson, a Winston- Salem State University professor, was among the Winston-Salem res idents attending the workshop. "It was a great experience," Robinson said of a role-playing session he participated in during one of the sessions. "Though we were all from similar cultural back grounds, spoke the same language and were in the same room, we had trouble communicating and under standing each other well enough to reach agreement. It’s not hard to see why pec^le who have different cultures and languages, are sepa rated by considerable distances and who have gripes and distrust that span several centuries have a hard time in reaching international agreements." Other Afro-Americans from Winston-Salem who participated in the workshop were Walter Mar shall and Theldora Small.
