graham smith
Graham Smith of 1228 E. 25th St. died Friday,
Jan. 22, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Sal
isbury. He was a native of Lincolnton and had moved
to Winston-Salem at an early age. He was employed
by Hanes Knitting Co. until his retirement in 1983.
Smith was a veteran of World War II and a
Methodist. He is survived by one sister, Martha Blake
ly of Winston-Salem; one brother, Thompson Smith of
Winston-Salem; several nieces, nephews, cousins,
other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan.
28, in the National Cemetery in Salisbury. Burial fol
lowed in the National Cemetery. Claric S. Brown and
Sons was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

While living in Winston-Salem, she was a mem
ber of St. Paul AME Church and served on the staff at
the Patterson Avenue YWCA. She also taught physical
education at Paisley Junior High School. She is sur
vived by her husband, Julian Lewis; two sons, Julian
Lewis Jr. and Gary Lewis; her parents-in-law, Nfr. and
Mrs. William Lewis; several aunts, Esther Tatum, Rita
Gaither, Juanita Penn and Jessie Penn; many other rel
atives and friends.

JOHN OTIS BYRD SR.
John Otis Bryd Sr., 74, of 365 Dixie Broadway
died Monday, Jan. 25, at his home. He was a native of
Orange County and had lived in Winston-Salem for 53
years.
Byrd was retired from Community Drug Store
and was a member of St Andrews United Methodist
Church. He is survived by his wife, Lementonia Byrd
of Winston-Salem; two scms, John Otis Byrd Jr. and
Richard A. Byrd, both of Winston-Salem; a devoted
friend, Clara McCloud of Winston-Salem; two daugh
ters-in-law, Doretha D. Byrd and Lillie M. Byrd, both
of Winstcm-Salem; six grandchildren; one great-grand
child; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and
friends.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30,
at the Ryan Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. C.E.
Strickland officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen
Cemetery. Ryan Funeral Home was in charge of the
funeral arrangements.
Willie Rufus Lykes of 460 Wright Sl died Sunday,
Jan. 31, at Baptist Hospital. He was a native of Lex
ington, S.C., a retired employee of Apex Construction
Co. and a member of Calvary Hill Apostolic Church,
where he served as a trustee.
He is survived by his wife, Lottie Lykes of the
home; three sons, Sgt. First Class Frank Kinzer of Fort
Bragg, Michael A. Kinzer of Winston-Salem and
Samuel Kinzer of Atlantic City, N.J.; 10 grandchil
dren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Ollie Mae Shiv
ers of Winston-Salem; one brother, Jonathan Hooks of
Swansea, S.C.; three aunts, Ertha Harris, Louise
Crumpton, both of Winston-Salem, and Jimmie Lou
Lykes of Swansea; his stepfather, Wilmer Hooks of
Swansea; many other relatives and friends.
Gilmore Funeral Home was in charge of the
funeral arrangmenis.
MARGARET MAGDELINE MILLER
LAURA ANN PENN LEWIS
Laura Ann Penn Lewis, daughter of the late
Cicero and Velma Penn, died Thursday, Jan. 14, after a
brief illness. She was a native of Winston-Salem, hav
ing lived here for 27 years, and earned a B.S. degree in
health education and biology and an MSPH degree in
public health educaition at North Carolina Central
University in Durham. In 1957 she married Julian
Lewis. The couple had two sms, Julian Jr. and Gary.
In 1962 the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where
she was a member of Sl James AME Church, where
she taught in the Sunday school and served as Sun
shine chairperson for the Alacrity Club.
At the time of her death, Lewis was employed as
the Perinatal Project Educator for the Maternity and
Infant Care Project at Cleveland Metropolitan General
Hopsital. She had been a director for volunteer ser
vices at Kaiser Cleveland Medical Center, health
careers coordinator for the Cleveland public schools,
health instructor for the Cleveland Job Corps and an
adoption case worker for the Catholic Family and
Children’s Services. She was a member of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha Wives, North Carolina
Central University Alumni Association, the National
Society of Allied Helath, the Greater Cleveland Area
Association of Volunteer Services and the advisory
Margaret Magdeline Miller of Knollwood Nurs
ing Home died Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the nursing home.
She was a native of Forsyth County but had spent
most of her life in White Plains, N.Y. While living in
White Plains, she became affiliated with Allen AME
Church, where she served as the president of the Pas
tor's Aide and was a member of many other clubs and
activities.
She is survived by four sisters, Annie Wharton,
Sudie M. Jones, both of Winston-Salem, Lillen
Lovette Miller of Dorchester, Mass., and Katherine
Mayfield of New York City; two brothers, Charlie R.
MiJler and Willie Ray Miller, both of Winston-Salem;
a niece, Margaret Bailey of Winston-Salem; several
other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30,
at Bethlehem AME Zion Church, with the Rev.
William Conrad officiating, assisted by the Rev.
Robert Bailey. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Gilmore Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral
arrangements.
MILDRED NEELY
Mildred Neely of 2931 New Walkertown Road
died Tuesday, Jan. 26, en route to Forsyth Memorial
Hospital. She was a native and resident of Winston-
Salem. She was a member of New Hope Missionary
Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Usher
Board and the Hospitality Committee.
She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Rice,
Wihelmenia M. Malachi, both of Winston-Salem, and
