rhe Rev. John Mendez will be the keynote speaker for the Black Political Awareness League's Black History Month program . Black History Month program set by BPAL TTie Rev. John Mendez will be itie keynote speaker at the annual Black History Month program sponsored by the Black Political y^svareness League. The program will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church. Mendez, pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, will deliver the program's keynote address. A native of New York, Mendez received his undergradu ate degree in Afro-History and Phi losophy from Shaw University. He has a master's degree from South eastern Baptist Theological Semi nary and is a doctoral student at Boston University. As first vice president of the General Baptist Slate Convention, Mendez oversees foreign missions. He is a current board member for the Black Theology Project and is a former board member of the YMCA and the Urban Arts Coun cil. Mendez has travelled exten sively and has visited Central America, Nairobi, Kenya, Havana, West Africa and Hawaii. He and his wife, Sarah, have two children. Naomi Jones is chairman of BPAL. History group to examine black education The Society for the Study of Afro-American History in Win- sion-Salem and Forsyth County is sponsoring a program entitled: "Early Perspectives of Black Edu- cadon in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County" Sunday, Feb. 14. The program will take place in the vestibule of the K. R. Williams Auditorium on the campus of Win ston-Salem State University at 4 ^n. The purpose of the program is to review the importance of educa tion in the lives of black citizens in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and to introduce the Society's annual membership and fund rais ing drives Five hundred new members and a fifty-thousand dollar fund raising campaign are two of our goals for 1988. The ultimate goal is to establish an historical muse- i/TPA offers expanded job skills program Welfare receipients are being offered an opportunity to identify and gain new career options liirough a new and different kind of nPA program. In the Career Entry and Enrichment Training (CEET) Pro gram adult participants are guided through a multi-faceted approach to jobs and careers. In addition to the standard job-training activities, the CEET Program offer numerous local role models - representatives from all facets of the workforce - who offer support and encourage ment in an informal presentation. Another phase of this program offers cultural and job-enrichment experiences through visits to sig nificant establishments in and around the business/industrial community. The central theme of the CEET Program ishelping partici pants identify an exciting and motivating career choice to which they may progress from their first job placement. Classes are sched uled to be held on Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at God's Community Store house on Main Street in Walnut Cove.
