Goode spoke to radio and tele vision students at Jefferson High School in Portland during a recent appearance in the city to help unveil the "Gallery of Greats: Black Journalists ... She is a native of Winston-Salem and attended Winston-Salem State Uni versity and Rutledge College, where she studied business manage ment. Larry Buddie, operations man ager out of Rock Hill, S.C., notes that the reason Childes was appointed manager was on account of her leadership ability and the way she organized the store at a very crucial time. Childes has had formal busi ness training, but she attributes most of her leadership ability to her grandfather, Benjamin Blackshear, who always taught her to be a lead er, to be out in front. Being the old est in a family of seven children helped in that area, too. Sandra Childes recently became the manager of the Plej’s Textile Mill Outlet in Northside Shopping Center. Childes enjoys the new posi tion and enjoys working with peo ple. She is the mother of two chil dren, Shermica and Shermaine. She is the daughter of Minnie Polite of Winston-Salem.
