Williams, chancellor emeritus of Winston- Salem State University, has been named the 1988 winner of the Sara Lee/Charles McLean Community Service Award. I , . "As chancellor of Winston- Salem Stale University and a I scholar, Dr. Williams has been a .guiding force in preparing students to meet the changing needs of our society," said Keith Aim, vice pres ident of Sara Lee Corp. "Yet he has also been instrumental in making changes in our community through ' his work as an alderman, a minis ter, a teacher and a leader. Dr. Williams has worked dili- • . gently to make Winston-Salem a '■mmi better community and to provide opportunities for the generations that will come after him." Williams first joined the facul ty at Winston-Salem State Univer sity in 1936 and was appointed president in 1962. During his administration, the school complet ed many major capital improve ments and expanded its education al program. He retired as chancel lor in 1977. A teacher and a minister, Williams was also the first minori ty member elected to the Winston- Salem Board of Aldermen in 1947. The Sara Lee/Charlcs McLean Community Service Award was initiated in 1985 to recognize New Face John Henry Alexander has joined the staff at Russell's Funeral Home as a public rela tions director/funeral consultant. He is a native of Winston-Salem and a graduate of Winston- Salem State University. He also graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science. Alexander is licensed to prac- / tice embalming and funeral J directing. He is active with sev- eral local organizations and is a member of Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church, members of the local community who provide services to those in need and also motivate people to improve their quality of life. It was named for Charles McLean, retired suite field secretary of the NAACP. Previous winners of the Sara Lee/Charles McLean Community Service Award include the Rev. David Hedgicy, Moses Lucas, Robert Eller, Sara Vernon, Patrick L. Hairston and the late Louise Wilson. The award in presented annu ally during the Winston-Salem Branch NAACP Freedom Fund banquet. Womble, organizer of the town meeting, said he v?as satisfied with the outcome, "Everything went fine," he said. ”I believe it's good to bring City Hall to the people sometimes. We've been having them for about three years." Womble also said that town meetings are the best way to find out what is really on the minds of the people. "The best way to do it is the way it was done in the early New England days," he said, "They gathered the town officials and the people together and the people told them what was on their minds.He also said that many things were accomplished through the meetings. "Great progress has been made through these meetings," he said. "New syeet lights have been placed on Reynolds Park Road, the picnic area has gotten new bathroom facil ities, and we were also able to build new tennis courts around the recre ation center."
