PageAlO Winston-Salem Otroaide Thursday, April 28, 1988 Jones named auxiliary head The American Legion Auxil ary has re-elected Martha Jones as I8lh district president. Mrs. Jones was elected at the district meeting which recently was held in the city. Mary G. Thomas was elected I8th district vice president Officers who have served as presidents on the unit level are eli gible for the district positions. Mrs. Jones will focus on the responsibility of overseeing all pro grams planned for seven units in the I8th district Thomas' job will focus on junior auxiliary programs involving membership. Recruitment of girls from infancy to 18 years of age will be the 1988-89 goal. The district reached its goal in March. "Working together in the Amer ican Legion Auxiliary will be very beneficial for us," Mrs. Jones said. "The job will be very rewarding for a mother-daughter team." Mrs. Jones has worked for the N.C. State University Extension Service for 17 years. Mrs. Thomas is employed by Winston-Salem State University and Stouffer's.Both are members of Zion Memorial Baptist Church. Flower Niche holds meeting at the McKoys The Flower Niche Garuen Club held its monthly meeting Sat urday, April 16, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William McKoy. A lunch was served at the start of the meet ing. Edythe Williams, the club's president, opened the session with he Collect and a poem by Ralph •Valdo Emerson, "Seeing Beauty." The agenda included the read ing and approval of the minutes of the previous meeting, announce ments, the Fourth District Council report and a discussion of the plans for the upcoming Horticultural Show. Three club members led dis cussions during the meeting. They were Mozella Williams, "Care of the Miniature Rose;" Savannah Lewis, "The Christmas Cactus;" and Bernice Davenport, "Container Sfegetable Gardens." Members attending included Vivienne Conley, Lois Hauser, Leola Sadler, Eula Smith, Louise McGhee, Grace Lowery, Bessye Dobson and Marian Wooten. Carl A. Allen receives award On Marcn lo ana i /, me Edu- . ational Services Unit of the D. C. Department of Corrections held its Second Annual Teacher's Confer ence in Washington. This year's tlieme was "Proud Professionals; Helping Others to Be Proud," where Carl A. Allen was named Guidance Counselor of the ycar-1987-1988. Allen is a 1973 graduate of Winston Salem University. He earned the master of science degree in 1976 from North Carolina A & T State University. He also did fur ther study at the University of the District of Columbia. Prior to his move to Washing ton, Allen was a counselor at WSSU. He served as the advisor to the class of 1982. Currently, he is a guidance counselor with the D. C.
