Thursday. April 28.1988 NAACP From Page A1 tern," said Murphy. He said that negotiations were ongoing and that eventhough the pretrial con ference was in preparation for a court hearing, he was optimistic that the community and the Board of Commissioners would come to an agreement. : "We continue to negotiate in •good faith," he said, "but, it is advantageous for the community :to work out their own problems." Marshall, however, does not share Murphy's optimism. "After :20 years of dealing with Forsyth County elected officials. I’m not ■guided by my optimism," he said. "I just look at their record of cold neglect" He said that the NAACP had attempted in 1974 to present an affirmative action plan to the Board of Commissioners. "That Was a fairly liberal Board and they had the will, but they were defeated before any action could be taken," he said. Marshall said that the fact that no Afro-Americans or women sit on the Board of Com- ;missioners directly affects the employment prospects for the two ■groups. "This is a white, male chauvinistically run County," he said. "Females are affected, loo. What we are doing will help as many people on the other side as it will help us." Dr. James N. Ziglar Jr., chair man of the Forsyth County Can- missioners, decUned comment COMMUNITY NEWS DEADLINES... The Chronicle welcomes community news and calendar items.
