Services were held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Gilmore Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. J.T. Miller officiating. Burial followed in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Gilmore Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements. MRS. LOUISE HAIRSTON CARETHERS Mrs. Louise Hairston Carethers of 2518 ty. Cherry St. died Monday, Jan. 16, at Baptist Hospital. She was born in Winston-Salem and was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where she was a for mer member of the Senior Choir. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Reynolds of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Laura C. Pow ell, with whom she lived; two sons, Mr. Leon Carethers and Mr. James L. Carethers, both of Win ston-Salem; a goddaughter, Ms. Ola Mae Caldwell of Winston-Salem; one sister, Mrs. Queen Ester Bacote of Winston-Salem; a devoted granddaughter, Ms. Jesstena Nichols of the home; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a devoted son-in-law, Mr. James C. Powell of the home; a devoted daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Carethers of Winston-Salem; several other relatives and friends. Services were held Saturday, Jan. 21, at New Bethel Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Drayton offici ating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Gilmore Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements. MR. WILLIE LEE BLACKWELL Mr. Willie Lee Blackwell, 73, of 1609 N. Patter son Ave. died Sunday evening, Jan. 15, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He, was a native of Sumter, S.C., and had lived in Winston-Salem for 53 years. He was a member of St. Stephens Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Vocal Choir, and was a retired employee of the City of Winston-Salem in the Water and Sewer Division. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II, and was a member of the Scottish Rites Order of Mount Moriah No. 168. He is survived by his wife, Ms. Bessie B. Black well of the home; two daughters, Ms. Gwendolyn Bradley and Ms. Willie Ruth Russell, both of Win ston-Salem; one sister, Ms. Alice Tomlin of Sumter; two brothers, Mr. Laney Blackwell of Pompano Beach. Fla.. and Mr. Foster Blackwell of Maysville. S.C.; four grandchildren, Rashawnda Bradley, Wen dell Bradley, Eric Russell and Bernard Russell, all of Winston-Salem; one sister-in-law, Ms. Furdenia McRaven of Hartsville. S C.; one son-in-law, Mr. Bernard Russell Sr. of Winston-Salem; many other J relatives and friends. Services were held at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, at St. Stephens Baptist Church, with the Rev Joseph R. Samuels officiating. Burial followed in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery. Russell's was in charge of the funeral arrangements. MRS. EMMA ELDRIDGE SCOTT Mrs, Emma Eldridge Scott of 916 E. 17th St. ? died Sunday* Jan. 22, at Baptist Hospital. She was born in Forsyth County and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Vocal Choir, the' Pastor's Aide, the Deaconess Board and the Sunday School Department. She was a retired employee of the DeHart Laundry. She is survived by two sons, Mr. Carlton Eldridge and Mr. Harry A. Scott Jr., both of Winston Salem; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Odessa King and Mrs. Frances Stanley, both of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Mr. Thomas Eldridge of Midway, Mr. Luther Eldridge, Mr. Charlie Eldridge and Mr. David Eldridge, all of Winston-Salem; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Wanna K. Scott; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gilmore Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements. MS. ANNIE BELL HAIRSTON Ms. Annie Bell Hairston, 63, of 858 Camel Ave. died Monday morning, Jan. 16, at her home. She was a native of Iroquois, W.Va., and had lived in Win ston-Salem for more than 60 years. She was a mem ber of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Sarah Missionary Group. She attend ed the local public schools and was a graduate of (Winston-Siftfem State University. She was a retired eiftptayee of R.J. Reynolds Processing Plant in Davie County^and was a member of the Temple-Camel Avenue Flower Club, She is survived by one daughter, Ms. Anne E. Hairston of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Lucinda H. Perry of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Lillie H. Hill of Mount Vernon, N.Y., Mrs. Eleanor H. Organ of Sil ver Springs, Md., and Mrs. Bernice H. Moore of Winston-Salem; six brothers, Mr. Braxton C. Hairston Jr., Mr. Earnest L. Hairston, Mr. James F. Hairston^Mr. William O. Hairston. Mr. Pey ton T. Hairston, all of Winston-Salem, and Mr. Charles E. Hairston of Roanoke, Va.f several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Services were held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with Dr. Serenus T. GENO HENRY BARBER Mr. Geno Henry Barber of 317 Bermuda Run Drive died Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Woodbridge, N .J. He was born in Winston-Salem and was chief cook at Farleigh Dickerson University, where he was shop steward. He was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. ? He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betty M. Barber of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Stacy Anderson of Nyack, N.Y., Ms. Deborah Lybrand and Ms. Joy M. He was born in Wilkesboro and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Factory No. 8. EMMA HUMBLE Mrs. Emma Humble, 103, formerly of 1531 Claremont Ave., died Sunday morning, Jan. 15, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was bom in Ander son, S.C., to the late Mary Davis and Andrew Grove on Nov. 16, 1885. She spent the majority of her life in Winston-Salem. She was a former member of New Bethel Baptist Church and a domestic worker. She is survived by one son, Bishop Joseph J. Humble of Washington; one grandson, Mr. Michael Humble of Washington; several other relatives and friends. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Warnie C. Hay officiating. Burial followed in the family plot in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
