Dishwashers keep pace with consumer expectations By Joanne j. falls Agricultural Extension Agent Today's dishwashers deliver clean dishes without prior rinsing and can be programmed to meet individual needs, according to reports from the appliance indus try to the Soap and Detergent Association. Studies show that the majority of dishwasher owners prerinse dishes by hand, even though this extra step is not necessary except in the case of burned-on food. Manufacturers have made major stride^ in improving dishwashing performance to accommodate today's busy lifestyles. ? ? Water distribution has been improved to aid in soil removal. For example, dishwasher arms deliver more forceful sprays of water, racks have been redesigned so that the spray is not imped ed, and pumps have greater water pres sure. ? Water heating has been improved to dissolve fats and oils (which reduces the chances of filming) and to aid in drying. This has been accom plished by thermostats to regulate the intake of hot enough water, temperature boosters to heat water that is too cool and improved insulation to retain heat better. ? Improvements such as soil Falls Sara Lee seeks applicants for Leadership Award Sara Lee Corp. has announced that it is seeking Leadership Award applications from non-profit organi zations which focus on assisting disadvantaged people. The Leadership Award is a $25,000 grant from the Sara Lee Foundation. Applications will be accepted from non-profit organiza tions in communities where Sara Lee Corp. has a facility. ' Only non-profit organizations that meet the following eligibility standards may apply for the awards An organization must: demonstrate leadership and outstanding perfor mance in meeting the needs and problems of the disadvantaged, sound management through the meaningful objectives, a commit ment to involve community mem bers in its program, an involved and committed board of directors, have the capability to serve as a model and have thoughtful plans to use the award funds to support the continu ation and expansion of its work.
