Dishwashers
keep pace with
consumer expectations

Today's dishwashers deliver
clean dishes without prior rinsing
and can be programmed to meet
individual needs, according to
reports from the appliance indus
try to the Soap and Detergent
Association.
Studies show that the majority
of dishwasher owners prerinse
dishes by hand, even though this
extra step is not necessary except
in the case of burned-on food.
Manufacturers have made major
stride^ in improving dishwashing
performance to accommodate
today's busy lifestyles. ?
? Water distribution has been
improved to aid in soil removal.
For example,
dishwasher
arms deliver
more forceful
sprays of
water, racks
have been
redesigned so
that the spray
is not imped
ed, and pumps
have greater
water pres
sure.
? Water
heating has
been improved to dissolve fats
and oils (which reduces the
chances of filming) and to aid in
drying. This has been accom
plished by thermostats to regulate
the intake of hot enough water,
temperature boosters to heat water
that is too cool and improved
insulation to retain heat better.

Electronic controls allow
today's consumer to program the
ii
dishwasher for efficiency and spe
cific uses.
? Washing cycles, water and
energy consumption are automati
cally monitored so dishwashers
can be programmed to wash heav
ily soiled items in a power wash
or delicate china in a light wash.
? A delay-start feature is
available to program the dish
washer to start up to 12 hours
after it is loaded. In this way,
water usage can be staggered and
off-peak utility rates can be taken
advantage of.
? Microprocessors can diag
nose such operating problem as a
blocked arm or an obstructed
draki.
Noise reduction is another
consumer-requested dishwasher
improvement. . ;
Sound-deadening materials,
improved insulation, quioter
motors and redesigned wpsh
impellers contribute to lowering
noise levels. I
