Area Deaths And Funerals MISS HAZEL MAE KELLAM- ? ? Miss Hazel Mac Kellam, 86, of 1005 N.W. 25th St. died Sunday, March 26, at Forsyth Memorial Hos pital. She was born Oct. 31, 1902, to the late Mr. Alexander "Alex" Kellam and Mrs. Maggie Cox Kel lam in Pinnacle. She was the first of six children. Her four brothers, Mr. Oscar Kellam, Mr. William Kellam, Mr. Walter Kellam and Mr. Ernest Kellam, preceded her in death. She was baptized young and joined Mount Man ah Baptist Church in Pinnacle. She com pleted her elementary education in the Stokes County public school system &nd continued her education at Bennett College in Greensboro and North Carolina Central University in Durham. She returned to her home community, where she was employed as an instructor in the Stokes County public school system. -She later moved to Philadelphia, where she operated a catering business for about 40 years. She moved back to Winston-Salem in October 1980 to spend the remaining years of her life with her only sister. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Nonnie K. Gilliam of Winston- Salem, one niece, Mrs. Awilda G. Neal of Winston- Salem, and several nephews, includ ing Mr. Wilbur H. Gilliam of Reidsville. Services were held Wednesday, March 29, at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lewis Crawford officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Hooper Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.* MR. JONATHAN D'SHAWN GARDNER Mr. Jonathan D'Shawn Gardner, five months, of 407 E. 14th St. died Sunday, April 2, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 27, 1988, in Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his mother, Ms. Tina L. Wiley; his father, Mr. Larenzer Gardner Jr. of Augusta, Ga.; one sister, Ms. Keshanna J. Wiley of the home; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Durant, Mrs. Daisy Price and Mr. Larenzer Gardner Sr., all of Winston Salem: three uncles. Mr. Jonathan L. Wiley Jr.. Mr. James Friday and Mr. Dante Durant of Winston-Salem; six aunts, Mrs. Lishah Thompson of Albuquerque, N.M., Mrs Carol Pearson, Ms. Jeanette Wiley, Ms. Lisa Wiley and Ms. Daniele Durant, all of Winston-Salem; 17 cousins; many other relatives and friends. Services were held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, at the Hooper Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Joseph Park, associate minister of Galilee Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Hooper Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements. MR. JAMES THOMAS CHRISTIAN Mr. James Thomas Christian of 2964 Bainbridge Drive died Saturday, April 8,?L^orsyth Memorial Hospital. He was a native o^r^on County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Naomi F. Chris tian: a daughter, Mrs. Natalie Mclver of Boston; one sister, Mrs. Georgia Adamski of Washington, and a grandson, Mr. James R.C. Mclver. _ Services werehekhat 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11, at St. Benedict the Moor ?atholic Church. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Hooper Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements. MRS. MAMIE PAYNE CLODFELTER Mrs. Mamie Payne Clodfelter of 702 Quail Road died Tuesday, April 4, at Lexington Memorial Hospi tal. She was a lifelong resident of Lexington and a retired employee of RP.G., the Defenders Division. She is survived by her husband, Mr. James D. Clodfelter of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Diane Nixon and Mrs. Lisa Freeman, both of Lexington; four sons, Mr. James Clodfelter, Mr. David Clodfelter, Mr. Tony Clodfelter and Mr. Robert Clodfelter, all of Lex ington; six grandchildren; one brother, Mr. Bobby Payne of Lexington; one sister, Mrs. Hilda Fowler of Brooklyn, N.Y.; many other relatives and friends. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, at First Baptist Churcfi in Lexington, with the Rev. Glenn Pettiford officiating. Burial followed in Lexing ton City Cemetery. Gilmore's was in charge of the funeral arrangements. MRS. MARY EATON WEST Mrs. Mary Eaton West, 92, of 401 W. 23rd St. died Tuesday, April 4, at Baptist Hospital. She was a member of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Chucch, a Deaconess Board member, a member of the Sunday School Department and the Senior Missionary Society. She was a member of the West 23rd Street Flower Club and the Senior Citizens Club. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Ollie W. Williams, Mrs. Inez W. Ray, Mrs. Dorcus W. Black, Mrs. Helen W. Smith, all of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Jettie W. Moore of Lexington; two sons, Mr. Buford C. West Jr. and Mr. Thomas West Sr. of Winston Salem; one brother, Mr. Clinton Eaton of Far Rock away, N.Y.; two sons-in-law; three daughters-in-law; 28 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; many other relatives and friends. Services were held at 1 1 a.m. on Friday, April 7, at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, with Dr. J.D. Ballard officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery! Gilmore's was in charge of the funeral arrangements. MR. NATHANIEL LYLES SR. Mr. Nathaniel Lyles Sr. of 200 N. Wheeler St. died Thursday, April 6, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Winston-Salem and a self employed roofer and truck driver. He was a member of Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Doris H. Lyles of the home; two daughters, Ms. Leslie Lyles of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Lisa Brown of Winston-Salem; two sons, Mr. Lloyd Lyles of Baltimore and Master Nathaniel Lyles Jr. of the home; his mother, Mrs. Lula Lyles of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Mr. David Lyles and Mr. Cedell Lyles Jr., both of Winston Salem; many other relatives and friends. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11, at Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church, with Elder D.M. Jones officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery. Gilmore's was in charge of the funeral arrangements. MR. ERIC DENARD LEWIS ? Mr. Eric Denard Lewis, 17, of 1306 Mumford St. died Sunday, April 9, in Winston-Salem. He was a native and resident of Winston-Salem. He was a junior at Parkland High School, participating on the football, basketball, baseball and track teams. He was named to the All-Conference Football Team in 1988. He is survived by his mother, Miss Patricia Lewis of the home; his father, Mr. Michael Long of Winston Salem; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Lewis, and his maternal grandfather, Mr. Eugene Lewis, both of Winston- Salem; one brother, Mr. Kedrick Lowery of Winston-Salem; one sister, Ms. Mechia Jackson of Winston-Salem; a devoted friend, Ms. Dakeeta McCaskill of Winston-Salem; many other relatives and friends. Gilmore's is in charge of the funeral arrangements. MRS, SARAH E IGHNER SANDE RS Mrs. Sarah Eighner Sanders of 100 N. Jackson Ave. died Friday, April 7, at Forsyth Memorial Hospi tal. She was born in Union County, S.C., and was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where she was a member of Sunday School Class No. 1, chairman of the Deaconess Board, president of the Ladies' Aide, Missionary Circle No. 5 and others. She was a mem ber of the Jackson Avenue Flower Club, Sisters of Bivouac No. 530, Order of the Eastern Star, and Sky land Senior Citizens Club. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Moore of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Mary Cuffee of Herndon, Va.; two sons, Mr. John Sanders of Hamp ton, Va., and Mr. William Sanders of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Ms. Nancy D. Sanders of Winston Salem; two sons-in-law, Mr. Matthew Moore and Mr James Cuffee of Herndon; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Vinnie Suber and Mrs Lucille Edwards, both of Winston^Salem; one brother Mr. Robert Shell of Pittsburgh; many other relatives and friends. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 10 at New Bethel Baptist Church, with Dr. Kenneth R Williams officiating. Burial followed in Evergreer Cemetery.
