Mount Zion Baptist Church dedicates $1 million File-Goodwin Center Mount Zion Baptist Church dedicated its File-Goodwin Enrich ment Center last Sunday, June 25, following its morning worship ser vice. The center, erected at a cost of more than $1 million, is named in honor of Dr. R.L. File, the second pastor of the church, and Dr. K.O.P. Goodwin, the third pastor and the present pastor emeritus. his portrait. Karen S. McDonald and Clifton Cannon paid a tribute to Dr. Goodwin and Josh Hennigan and Kenya Thornton unveiled his portrait. M.C. Murray, chairman of the Board of Trustees, presented the key to the center to Dr. Churn. Mayor Wayne Corpening read a proclamation praising Mount Zion for its religious and community - -- ? ? ? Kellum, the oldest member of the church in terms of age and service to the church, was assisted in cutting the ribbon by Deacon Norman Sanders and by Shirley Churn, wife of the present pastor of the church, Dr. Serenus T. Chum. Helen W. Falls gave a special tribute to Dr. File and Dwight Jen nings and Michelle Vigil unveiled involvement and naming June 25, 1989 "Mount Zion Baptist Church Day." Music for the occasion was fur nished by the church's Youth Ensemble, The Gwendolyn Poindexter Hand bell Choir, and a solo by Starling Churn. Others partici pating in the cere monies were Dr. Robert Sawyer, pastor of Home Moravian Church; Dr. H.L. Moore, president of the Winston-Salem Ministers' Confer ence; Dr. Jerry Drayton, pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church; the Rev. William S. Fails, pastor of Hanes Memorial CME Church; and Alderman Virginia K. Newell. The dedication program was part of the church's centennial cele bration, which will conclude Sun day. The guest speakers will include: Thursday, Pastor Char lene Lewis, New Calvary Holi ness Church, Mocksville, 7:45 p.m.; Friday, Elder Erwin McQueen, Friendship Temple Church of God In Christ, Greens boro, 7:45 p.m.; and Sunday, Bishop Lawrence S. Tate, New Faith Chapel Holiness Church, 4 p.m. Minister Lillie P, Gailes, recently ordained into the New Faith Chapel Holiness Church organization, will be the Sunday night speaker at the church July 2. Minister Gailes has been in the ministry for 1 8 years. She is a native of Durham County and is the mother of 12 children . Minister Lillie Gailes is a member of New Faith Chapel Holiness Church and was also appointed to the church's Mother Board by the pastor, Dr. Lawrence S. Tate. The service will begin at 7:30 Utile Gailes p.m. Open Door Apostolic Church of Christ was organized in 1942,? by Bishop Joseph and Mother C.L. Acker. A church mission was opened on 1101 Hamlin -Gashton St., and the membership consisted of nine members. The name, Open Door Apos tolic Church of Christ, received the name as the result of a vision from the Lord. The word was preached by Peter on the day of Pentecost: The door was opened and it lias been opened since. The Church was chartered in 1964 and a larger edifice was purchased on 610 Smith St. as the membership continued to grow. In 1971, Pastor C.L. Acker cared for her husband as his health failed. The membership decreased after Bishop J. Acker's death in 1973. Mrs. Acker continued the work. In 1976, the church was sold and the members scattered. In June 1981, open door was re opened at its location, 922 Alder St. Mrs. Acker asked Bishop Lawrence S. Tate, pastor and founder of New Faith Chapel Holiness Church, to serve as exec utive bishop of Open Door Apos tolic Church and the two merged in service and joined together in -fellowship. Mrs. Acker's health failed and during her illness, she lost both of her legs. Dr. Lawrence S. Tate, the executive bishop, the execu tive bishop, appointed Elder Tony D. Williams in April 1988 as co-* pastor. Elder Williams was given the duty to keep Open Door in opera tion, as well as build up the mem bership. He said his main objec tive is to be a blessing to the Happy Hill Garden Community. Elder Williams served as ruling elder of the New Faith Chapel Organization from 1987-1988, until he was elevated as the orga nization's overseer. Weekly services are: 10 a.m. Sunday School 11* a.m. Sunday Morning Worship Service 6 p.m. Altar Prayer Service 8 p.m. Tuesday Night Prayer Service The church's motto is "Love, Peace, Happiness in the Holy Ghost."
