Dumars says Pistons will shed 'Bad Boys' image for next season By BILL BARNARD Associated Press Basketball Writer NEW YORK -- Joe Dumars said the Detroit Pistons are going to turn all the "Bad Boys" T-shirts * into collectors items. We want to get away from being the Bad Boys," Dumars said Thursday after accepting the NBA Finals' Most Valuable Player tro phy and a new Jeep Cherokee from Sport Magazine. "Now that Rick Mahorn is gone, the Bad Boys are gone. When you lose a member of a team, you are never that team anymore. We decided on the way to the White House that without Rick, we can't be the Bad Boys," Dumars said. Mahorn, a 6-foot-10 forward who cultivated the Bad Boys image, was taken by Minnesota in the expansion draft last week, just two days after the Pistons com pleted a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. "It won't be easy without Rick," Dumars said. "He gave us things that were intangible. He got other teams frustrated and ready to fight instead of ready to play." Dumars, the most soft-spoken and modest of the Pistons, said he held the Pistons' outlaw image at arm's length. '1 was never really a part of the Bad Boys image, but it never bothered me," he said. "Not all of the Oakland Raiders were bad guys, and not all of the Los Ange les Lakers were show time." Dumars, an NBA All-Defensive team selection, blossomed as a shooter in the finals. After shoot ing 37 percent from the field in the Eastern Conference Finals against Chicago, Dumars made 38 of 66 shots -- 57.6 percent -- against the Lakers, averaging 27.3 points in four games. "This is the biggest honor I've ever had," he said. "I've always tried to be a good person, and to have something like this happen to you makes it all worthwhile." Dumars, whose regular-season scoring average in 1988-89 was 17.6 and whose career mark is * 14.1, said Coach Chuck Daly probably has more control about the future focus of his game than _ he has himself . "It's not up to me to change my game," Dumars said. "Chuck has a lot to say about it. We've had a lot of scorers in Detroit the last few years ? Isiah Thomas, Kelly Tripucka, Vinnie Johnson, John Long ? but I always thought I could score, that I would get my chance." He said the Pistons were moti vated all season by their seven game loss to the Lakers in the 1988 NBA Finals. "The fact that we should've won it last year stuck with us all sea son," Dumars said. "Even if you win 10 games in a row, you never forget. Then to sweep the Lakers makes it even sweeter." Dumars, the unanimous MVP choice by an 11 -member media panel, said he knew he won the award with about a minute left in the final game when a Disney World representative tapped him for a post-game commercial. 'That last minute of the game, I_ was in a daze," he said. "It was like I was there, but I wasn't there. I was too nervous to smile." ????nmMMMI Sera-Tec Biologicals Hours: Tues. - Sat. 7:00-2:30 Pay:* ?8? 1st Donation of the Week ? ?15g# 2nd Donation of the Week o ? *5??
