Prime Time Summer League Orange Crush remains undefeated By Chronide Staff The Prime Time Summer Basketball League is in its final week of the regular 'season and Orange Crush stands alone at the lop of the standings with a 6-0 record. The Crush has dominated league play to the extent of having a comfortable league lead over presstime, these would be the playoff pairings in the first round: Orange Crush vs. Villians; Pizza Express vs. Zoo Crew; Clemmons vs. Jamestown; and 311 Auto Parts vs. A Quality Realty. However, there were still . eight games left to play. Pizza Express holds down second place with a 5 4 mark. Clemmons and 311 Auto Paris are locked in a tie for third place with identical records of 4 4. Tonight will mark the end of the regular season and the play offs will begin next Tuesday , 5:30 p.m. at the Carver High School Gym. The first round play off format will pit the first place team against the eighth place team; the second place team against the seventh place team, etc. Based on the standings at Express. Next Wednesday the playoff semifinals will be played at 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. On Thursday, there will be an all-star game at 7:30 p.m., followed by the league championship game at 8:30 p.m. Here's a round-up on last week's action. The only games played last week were on Thurs day. No games were played last Tuesday because of the July 4th holiday. He was able to turn that desire into reality this year when he launched the Prime Time Summer Basketball League. In assessing the league's first year of operation, James, who is Prime Time's commissioner, said he is pleased with the progress made so far. "Things have gone far beyond my expectations. We've been able to establish some scholar ship money for some of the play "ft ~ * 1 ? ? ? ? ? ? crs. James explained that he has gotten support from area businesses to fund scholarships for one player from each of the league's eight teams. Admittedly, the amount per players is small ($100 this year), but he's looking for that figure to increase in coming years. He points out that he and each high school coach will jointly determine which player on-that team receives the money for school. "When I started this, there were some people in the background hoping that the league would fall on its face," he said. "But everything has worked out well. The response from folks has been good and I believe that the league will be able to attract more interest from major sponsors." James added that he wants to expand the league for next summer to include 16 teams with games * being played four times a week. to a 69-50 win over Jamestown. Jeff Williams chipped in with 15 points for the victors. For Jamestown, Rodney Nes bitt was the high point man with 22 points. 311 over Vidians Floyd Spears played a com plete game at both ends in pacing 311 Auto Parts to a 63-50 win over the Villians. Spears scored 19 points and snatched 14 rebounds. Brian Scott supplied additional firepower with 15 points. The Villians got balanced scoring, but they couldn't match Auto Parts from buzzer to buzzer. Paul Donohoe and Herbie Collins each tallied 14 points. Chris Frank added 12 points. Crush downs Clemmons Clemmons made a run at the Orange Crush in trying to knock them from the ranks of the unbeat en. But the Crush wouldn't be denied and they came out with a 72-67 win. Andre Owens carried the bulk of the offensive load for the win ners by firing in 26 points. He had help from Earl Lockhart who pumped in 18. For . Clemmons, Kerry Besecker's 19 points paced the attack, while Patrick King chipped in with 16. Kenny O'Neil rounded out the double figures scoring with 15 points. Pizza Express wins Pizza Express started the game with a full head of steam and never looked back as they dunked A Quality Realty by a margin of 81-65. Jermaine Carlton led the offense with 21 points, all of them coming inside the paint. David Russell ended the game with 15 and Tyrus Clark con tributed 12 points to the cause. This game was never in doubt. The Express led by 20 at the half and stretched their lead to as much as 35 points in the second half.
