WSSU Student Government Association officers installed The opening of the Joseph N. Patterson Assembly and Lecture Series began this week with the installation of Winston-Salem State University Student Govern ment Association officers for the academic year. The eight students who make up the SGA cabinet, including Miss WSSU, were administered the oath of office during an assembly of the student body, faculty and staff. The 1989-90 cabinet mem bers are: Wanda White, president, senior English major, Concord; Telia V. Hand, vice president, junior English major, Charlotte; Carla Bridges, secretary of social affairs, junior middle grades edu cation major, Concord; Harold Grier, secretary of the treasury, senior business major, Charlotte; Danny McSpadden, secretary of Dr.Glenda Gill to lecture at Wesleyan University Dr. Glenda Gill will visit Wes leyan University in Middletown, Ct, Oct. 15 and 16 for a series of appearances, including dramatic readings and lectures. Her two-day stay will include a slide lecture at the Honors College, titled, "Icebreaker for Blacks" and dramatic reading from black drama and poetry for the Introduction of Theater Studies course . She also will consult with faculty concerning ? program development in Mack American theater. Dr. Gill, associate professor of English at Winston-Salem State University, is the author of White Grease Paint on Black Performers: A Study of the Federal Theatre, 1935-1939. In addition to teaching and writing, Dr. Gill also has performed in and directed plays and recently presented a paper in Stockholm, Sweden, titled, "The Triumphant Rise of Earle Hyman: The Chauf^ feur of 'Driving Miss Daisy.' " Mr. Hyman, a native of North Carolina* is best known for his role as Dr. Cliff Huxtable's father on "The Cosby Show." WSSU sets open house and parents' day events for Oct. 7 Winston-Salem State Univer sity will conduct open house and parent's day Saturday, Oct. 7. Hundreds of prospective stu dents and families of current stu dents are expected toPvisit the campus. Open House and Parents' Day will run concurrently. The open house will include general information sessions, a minf^concert, faculty sessions. exhibits and performances, cam pus tours, a tailgate party and the WSSU vs. J.C. Smith University football game at Bowman Gray Stadium. Parents' Day activities will include parent/faculty/ staff con ferences, a mini-concert, a Par ents' Day program, a Greek Step Show, a tailgate party and the football game. Mr. Ram pageant to be held Oct. 1 0 The Winston-Salem State Uni versity Mr. Ram Pageant will be held Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 8 p.m. in K.R. Williams Auditorium. Six contestants will compete in the categories of fashion, talent and self-expression. The winner of the Mr. Ram title will assume the duties of escorting Miss WSSU to Homecoming Week events find par ticipating in such events as Honors Day, Career Day and Parents' Day. Judging for the pageant will be done by a committee of seven prominent community members. Contestants for the "title are Tim Sanders, Barry Johnson, Gio vanni Bass, Dareen Todd, Danny McSpadden and De wayne Brown. "Winston-Salem State Uni versity is continuing to strive for excellence," he said. "If we con tinue to be about making Winston Salem State better, one day we will take our deserved place in the state, in the nation and in the world." The Joseph N. Patterson Assembly and Lecture Series was established in honor of Dr. Joseph N. Patterson, professor of educa lion and philosophy at WSSU for 28 years. Shortly before his death, he proposed to the chancellor and some of his colleagues a series of a**emblies to stimulate cultural and academic "reawakening" on the campus.
