From a team standpoint, the Nation al Minority College Golf Championships was no contest. Jackson State's Tigers dominated the field, recording a 615 to win by 28 strokes over second place South Caroli na State (643). St. Augustine's placed third (648). : 1-2-4 finish Entering the Cleveland, Ohio tour nament, the Tigers wefe the odds on favorite to take the trophy. Coach Eddie Payton's team didn't disappoint as Mike OToole, Charles Yoo, and Peter Korzil ius finished first, second and fourth in the competition. However, Jackson State wasn't the only school to have more than one golfer finish among the top 10. Besides Chris Brown's third-place finish, St. Aug's got support from Charles Hammonds (shot 156 for eighth place) which gave them an added boost in the team race. In what may be viewed as a major surprise of the tournament, Prairie View in the individual standings. Shawn Sanders and Albert O'Neal shot 157 and 159 respectively to fmish in the No. 9 and No. 10 positions. OTooIeT this year's SWAC champi on, took low medalist honors by firing a 149 to beat out teammate Yoo who was the runner-up at 152. Brown, felt by many to be the best black golfer in the black college ranks, finished third with a 152 total. Sizzling 69 OToole put on a serious display of linksmanship during the first round, scorching the Highland Park Golf Course with a 69. He ran into problems the second day with an 80. But it was enough to hold off Yoo (78-74) and Brown (75-77), the *90 CIAA champ. Others finishing among the top 10 we^e: Cedrick Smith of Hampton Uni versity (sixth place, 155) and Frank Lewis of Texas Southern (seventh place, 156). South Carolina State, the national titleholder two years ago, was led by Dwayne McKelvey who posted identical rounds of 77 to place fifth with a 154. The Bulldogs secured a firm hold on the .No. 2 spot in the team standings after shooting 316 on the first day, trailing JSU by 10 strokes, and leading St Aug's by eight at that juncture. Conference-wise, SWAC prevailed thanks to Jackson State. But in looking at the top five finishers, the MEAC and XIAA^ grabbed the next four spots with Florida A&M (665) beating out Hamp ton (669) for fourth place. Black college golf hasn't received very much in the way of respect or noto riety. That's true for Division 1 and Divi sion II. No NCAA bids So much so, that no black college . team has ever been invited to play in the NCAA national championships. The NCAA decides who competes in the nationals based on strength of schedule and how well a school has fared vs. opponents ranked among the Top 30 in the nation. Black colleges have been shut out at that level because they aren't invited to compete in the tournaments Due to that oversight, this tourna ment was initiated four years ago to help black colleges fund their own golf pro grams. "When it comes to assisting black college golf programs, there is one orga nization that has experienced some early success since its inception in '84. The National Minority Junior Golf Scholarship Association awarded schol arship money to 33 golfers for the '89 '90 school year. Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $1,500. Twenty of the 33 scholarship recipients are current ly playing their collegiate golf at a his torically black institution. Since '84, the association has provided over $62,000 to help 83 college-bound minority golfers. The primary goal of NMJGSA is help college-bound minority golfers who have a demonstrated desire and interest in developing golfing and academic skills. In addition, the association iden tifies minority high school graduating golfers for college coaches who are looking for scholarship players. - Rolando Simmons Team Results ORDER OF FINISH/TEAMS 1.
