For our children Continued from page A4 Where are all the black men? Dead!, in jail or unemployed and unemployable. Where are the real black men? How can you call yourself a man when your women and children are afraid to walk the streets, to play on the playground? Young men, how can you disre spect your mother and grandmother and sister, your community, the chil dren who watch you and try to do the . same? We must throw off this fear of these young hoodlums and take our communities back. ? Our community leaders have been quiet too long. Where are they? A coward dies a thousand times, a brave man only once. If I must die, let me dre a brave, proud black man. Black men stand up and be counted. Your women and the world are watching you. What'cha gonna do? Robert T. Greer Black Men and Women Against Crime God help us To the Editor: May God help us all!! My spirit is grieving for mankind and the world. My spirit is grieving for America. What has happened? Why has madness and hatred become the Ruler? How can men pray for death and destruction and annihilation in thp namp of I QVE? Why has man turned away from GOD? What has He done but LOVE, forgive, show mercy, answer prayers, be faithful, give grace, bless, overlook fault and frailties, and much, much more. What has He done? What has the Creator done? It is not too late to turn back to Him. It's not too late to turn back to LOVE. Shalom! Valjean Griggs Winston-Salem Patriotic poem To the Editor: America The Brave America oh Beautiful Please bring our loved ones home. We pray for them, We cherish them, But they've so far to roam. America, America We're proud of you For fighting, for this 0 Land of the free. America, Oh Beautiful With war planes in the stars, ? Our liberty and justice ~ Remember who you are. Judge Continued from page A4 even-present movement by White racists to eliminate African-Ameri cans or return to the plantations where the Massa has total control over their lives. * I cannot help but wonder: If Ms. Johnson had been of the White middle class would the judge not have tried a more rehabilitative type of punishment? Punishments, like community service, access to some type of rehabilitative program or just removing the children from the home. What many people fail to see is that this is the purpose for which Norplant was developed. It is not a liberating form of birth control but a way to effectively kill African Americans. ? ? If you give a young African American female the pill or con dom, there is no guarantee that she will use them. But if you insert Nor plant in her arm, you can be pretty sure that she will have a long period of sterilization. I would like to know where the groups like N.O.W., Planned Par enthood, and NARAL stand on this issue. They are supposed to be fighting for a woman's right to gov ern her body. Is not this act, the denial of motherhood, a blunt viola tion of these rights? But yet we have not seen their representatives on the television declaring war on Norplant But that is not surprising The Massa only wants the nigger to have the rights that fieleelsTie/she should have. I think it's safe to say that if a judge had ruled that a minority could not have an abortion, they would be screaming violation of rights. Could it be that they are only concerned with the rights that deal with elimination of African-Ameri cans, not creation? So why aren't they picketing Judge Broadman? Black progress Continued from page A5 demands of the Persian Gulf war, ihe federal deficit is expected to soar to more than $320 billion in this fiscal year. Contrary to George Bush's wishful thinking, the added burden of the Persian Gulf war will increase the deficit, drive up inter est rates and deepen the recession. Vernon Jordon, the former president of the National Urban League once said that "when while America gets a cold. Black America gets pneumonia." That was Mr. Jor don's way of saying that when America goes into recession, Black people are driven into economic depression. With racism still a fact of life in America, African-Ameri cans are still the last hired and the first to be fired. The Black unemployment rate is consistently two and a half to three times higher than that of our white counterparts. A dispropor tionate number of African-Ameri cans remain unemplpyed and underemployed. And Black income is still only about 56 percent of that of white Americans ? 18,000 for Blacks, 32,000 for whites. The war in the Persian Gulf is unnecessary, and it is certainly not in the best interests of the vast majority of African-Americans. When the Black soldiers return from the hot and hostile sands of . the Persian Gulf, they will find their racial kin still mired in poverty and despair. Having seen their brothers and sisters disproportionately die on the battlefield, they will return home to sec disproportionate numbers of African-Americans dying in the wretched ghettos of this country from neglect and genocide born of institutional racism and disregard for Africans in America. The very war they will return from will have drained vital resources away from the urgent task of eradicating hunger, poverty and disease in our communities. African-Americans are being called upon to fight in a war which will disproportionately affect Black communities across this country. White Americans may only con front the inconvenience of the cold. Black Americans will be forced to -endure the damaging, even fatal consequences of chronic pneumo nia. Special Continued from page A4 Feb. 23. Shirley Chisholm keeps all of us honest on the TBS Special, as she usually does: "The role of Black leadership in this country is to instill values and leadership, not give laconic discussions." Susan Taylor urged "each of us to get involved." Lee Brown admit ted that "there is no war on drugs." \ disagreed. "There is war on young people who sell drugs There is no war, however, on White mid die-class Americans who use drugs," I said. I should have said "middle-class" and not "White mid die-class." My firjal advice on the TBS special was a practical proposal to build an economic infrastructure by recycling our money ? ? our $350 billion. And speaking of practical, the TBS Black History Month Special is more than the static, unrelated offerings the public so often has to suffer through. This TBS TV Special is spe cial. Something else special during this special month of Black History is "American Black Eagles." This story of the first Black combat pilots, the Tuskegee Airmen, flies all month on "Tony Brown's Jour nal" on your local public TV sta tion. Now, there's a story on self help. T*e Winston-Salem S*? Douthit Winston-Salem Community watch To the Editor: As most of you are aware, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Department is now headed by Sheriff Ron Barker. In the past, Sheriff Barker was instru mental in the development of 500 Community Watch Programs. He has currently reorganized the Patrol Divi sion so that more patrol officers will be on the street as of February 1. He has also appropriated funds so that two additional Narcotics Officers will be added to our department. These positions will assist in the ever increasing drug problems that Forsyth County faces daily. We are very inter ested in our continued progress as well as any ideas and concerns you may have. As we begin 1991, we are faced with updating our files. Please for ward a copy of your Chairman's and Black Captain's names and addresses to me. Also, in an effort to keep the Community Watch Programs grow ing and our neighborhoods safe, we are always interested in new areas to cover. If you know of any adjoining neighborhoods with residents not covered by a Community Watch, please forward that information to me also. The following is a List of some programs that the Forsyth County Sheriffs Department will be sponsor ing in 1991: ?Feb. H) - Feb. 16: First National Child Safety Awareness Week.with a display at Hanes Mall; ?May 13 -May 17: Law Enforce ment Week with a display at Hancs Mall; ?October: Red Ribbon Cam paign, Anti-drug Campaign. The Crime Prevention Unit is underway with the reinstatement of a Safety itaven program. This is a pro gram whereby window stickers are issued to residents in our communi ties and established as a safe resi dence. Through education in the school system, children are able to seek refuge in these "Safety Havens" in an emergency or trouble situation. - We have received many new ideas from thecitizens of Forsyth County. It is always encouraging to seek supporters of law enforcement in our communities. 1 look forward to hearing from, and meeting with, every one of you in the future. Sincerely, Sergeant Ralph Mason Urban League's Seniors win award For the sixth year in a row the Winston-Salem Urban League's Seniors in Community Service Pro gram has won an award from the National Urban League for meeting its goal of placing senior workers in jobs in the community. SCSP, which has been a local Urban League pro gram since 1983, helps low-income workers, 55 and older, by training them in subsidized internships with 9 public and nonprofit agencies until they have acquired marketable skills and experience and can be placed in subsidized jobs. SCSP placed 20 of its 67 enrolled workers in 1990 into unsubsidized jobs, meeting the goal of 30 percent set by the National Urban League and quali fying The program for the placement award. "Workers over 55 have a lot of untapped energy to give to the community," said SCSP Director Cleo Solomon. "Older workers are very dependable. They have positive attitudes and bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the workplace." "The fact that we have won this award six years in a row indicates we are in a community that is receptive to hiring older workers," Solomon said. "We have educated our community to the benefits of hiring older workers, and now many employers call requesting older workers." There are currently 72 senior citizens enrolled in Receiving her award on behalf of the Wlnston Salem Urban League Seniors in Community Service Program la (far left) Cleo Solomon, the program director.
