Winston 11s win consolation trophy
in Greensboro, 14s split four games

AAU basketball action is
beginning to heat up as the regional
and state tournaments quickly
approach for Winston Lake's
YMCA teams. Last week, the Lak
ers Us captured the consolation
championship in the Greensboro
Easter Tournament, while the Lak
es* 14s split four games in the Cen
tral YMCA Tournament played in
Winston-Salem.
Here's a recap of the action.
Winston Lake lis
The Laker Us came through
with a 49-34 win over Staunton
(Va.) to capture third place in the
Greensboro tournament. Eric Jones
and Anthony Nelson combined to
hit 25 points to lead the Winston
offense.
Anthony Tomlinson and
Jonathan Butler chipped in with
eight points each, while Omar Pow
ell came off the bench and delivered
a solid defensive effort.
Winston Lake got off to a good
start in the tounupnent by whipping
Staunton in the opening round, 44
42. Ibmlinson gave the Lakers the
victory with a put-bock basket with
dye seconds left in the game.
Antoine Barnes was the leading
scorer with 14 points, while Jones
and Nelson tallied 11 and 10 points
respectively. Tbmlinson added eight
points including the game winner.
The Lakers were knocked into
the loser's brackeLwhen they^
dropped a 33-49 decision to Hunt
ington (W.Va.) in the semi-finals.
Winston trailed by two (51-49) with
30 seconds to go. But a Laker
turnover gave Huntington posses
sion of the ball and the game.
Jones was the leading scorer
with 14 points. Barnes had 10
points and Butler finished with nine
points. -
Winston Lake rebounded in the
next game by defeating Greensboro
49-38. That victory put Winston in
the consolation finals.
Trailing 21-17 at the half, Win
ston Lake mounted a second half
surge to take control of the contest
Nelson ended the game with 13
points, Jones fired in 12 and Butler
tallied 10 pointar

Winston Lake 14s
The Laker 14s came away with
a .500 mark in last week's Central
YMCA Tournament.
Winston opened the tournament
with a 67-53 win over the Central
Y's MB" team as WiMiam Butler led
the attack with 20 points. Butler got
support ffom Ansel Brown (16
points) and Kevin Blackburn (15
points).
In the next game, Winston fell
84-75 to South DeKalb (Ga.). But
ler and Brown provided the bulk of
the offense, scoring 18 and 14
points respectively.
The Lakers came back to get
their second victory by toppling the
Central Y's "C" team, 61-56. Butler
was the top gun with 15 points and
James Nelson contributed 14 points
to the cause.
* ? In their final tournament game,
Wilkes County prevailed over the
Lakers, 42-35. Brown and Black
burn scored 10 points each and But
ler chipped in with eight points.
