Larry Stewart, Coppin State's 6-8 senior forward, has been named the 1991 winner of the John B. McLendoo Trophy which is awarded annually to the outstanding male basketball player -attending a historically black college or university. Stewart, a two-time MEAC Player of the Year ('90 and '91), compiled sterling credentials in staking his claim as "king of the hill" during the '90-'91 roundball season. The^ Philadelphia native paced this team to the MEAC regular season champi onship (14-2 vs. league opponents)a 19-11 overall record, and a post-sea son berth in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). The Coppin star averaged 24.2 ppg and led the MEAC in rebounding. His 13.5 per game rebounding average ranked third among all NCAA Divi sion I performers. He also blocked 48 shots, had 46 assists and was credited with 38 steals. Stewart shot 80 percent from the free throw line. While leading his Coppin team mates to a 4S-18 record over the past two seasons, Stewart was an all-tour nament selection each year. During the *89-,90 season, the same season the Eagles made the NCAA playoffs, Stewart spearheaded Coppin wins over Cornell, Creighton and Mary land. Stewart ended that season aver aging 23.8 points and 11.2 rebounds a game as the Eagles fashioned a 26-7 record. The McLendon Trophy, presented by the Extra Point Club of Atlanta, honors former coach John B. McLen % don. During his career, the legendary coach compiled a record of 523-166 while guiding basketball teams at North Carolina College (now North Carolina Central), Hampton, Ten nessee State, Kentucky State and Cleveland State.
